New Shuttle Bus Service linking City and Airport

Hi Folks,

A new shuttle bus system linking the city and the airport will commence on 29th May, 2010.

The service will run between the transport plaza in front of the central terminal building at the airport and the Civic Centre in Hertzog Boulevard, Cape Town.

Buses will depart every six minutes during peak periods and, at most, every 30 mins. during off-peak periods.

Tickets, at R50 a trip, can be purchased at the transport plaza.

Remember this service does not take you to the doors of your accommodation.

No - it's a bus service!!

It is part of the new Integrated Rapid Trasit (IRT) system which will eventually cover much of the city. As the buses use dedicated lanes both from the airport and around the city, it is faster than taxi or shuttle services. These are nearly all now complete - "The Red Brick Road"!

The first of the 43 custom-bulit buses have now been delivered in Cape Town and are being used for driver training. These are maxi-sized "bendy" buses. Eight of them are 256 seater 18 metre buses which will be mainly used on the main city routes and for World Cup Park-and-Ride. The rest are 120 seaters which are the ones that are being used on the Airport Service.

All the buses are designed for roll on wheelchairs and bicycles and have lots of baggage loading space.

Hi VdC -

Can I assume that you can take the shuttle back out to the airport from the Civic Center? (reverse trip)

Really glad to hear about this shuttle as I was JUST about to book a airport-to-cbd ride. Thanks!

Is it possible to get a taxi from the drop off point as I have looked on google maps and our accomodation is quite a long walk from Hertzog Boulevard!

Very possible to get a taxi, but perhaps better to book it in advance, rather than wait like you do in London or New York. You can google Cape Town Taxi and see what comes up.

It is possible to get a taxi from the City's' Civic Center. There are Porters who assist you, not that you would need any. You disembark level with the pavement..or rather raised platform.

Furthermore, you may then get onto the MyCiti Bus which runs through the City, IF YOU ARE GOING TO A HOTEL near or en-route. There are buses every 20min. You pay the Conductor/Inspector on the bus. The cost is R8.00

The great news is that that the current route is to be expanded to cover the city more thoroughly and then go via the Waterfront. There are more routes planned to include Sea-point and another to Canal Walk. The current routes are only operational until 17th July 2010. It seems that soon they will include Table Mountain....let's hope.

The buses are clean and the staff are well trained and friendly. There is ample space for luggage and it is wheel Chair Friendly.

When i took a trip on the bus there were quite a few tourist using it.

Be aware that The inner city bus service and the IRT (city to airport) ARE 2 SEPARATE ENTITIES. The route to Table-View/Milnerton should be ready very soon.
