Car Hire

I hope VdC is about but perhaps other can help

We are coming to the Cape next May - we have booked our flights but I would have assumed it would be better to wait to say a month or two before we go to obtain a hire car - is this a good policy in Cape Town?

For interest's sake I have been trawling a lot of car hire brokers and lessors and a BMW 3 series for three weeks in May 2011 is difficult to find for less than a £1000 at the moment (compare that to under £750 last year). The cheapest seem to be a company called CardelMar - I have never heard of them - anyone have any experience with them?

Nice to see that you are already planning your next trip - re car hire have a look at cabs cars www.cabs.co.za. I see that at today's exchange rate a BMW would cost £780 for 3 weeks in May - we have been using them for the last 8 years after the South African Tourist Office here in Paris recommending them to us - the best part of using them is that someone meets you personally off your flight with the car keys and takes you and your luggage straight to the car - so no standing in long lines at the car hire desk with everyone else after a long flight.

We too have noticed quite a hike in car hire rentals. We are also in the planning stage for early 2011 and have had a quote from Holiday Auto's which is at least 25% more than when we hired from them in January of this year.

We have always found it difficult to hire a specific car, only one from the Group, We are told it depends on what is available at the actual time. We usually hire in Cape Town for around 8 weeks but still we can't be guaranteed a specific car which is most annoying.

Car hire seems to be up at least 25% everywhere. I always use carhire300. You pay a £75 deposit and then the balance 8 weeks before you travel.

I checked car hire rates again last week, and it is now more than it was 5 months ago.

State of the global economy I guess?
