Which wine estates should we visit?

We'll be in Cape Town/Western Cape for 8 days this October/November. My friend takes medication & I'm driving so not too much drinking going on! We want to visit at least 1 if not 2 wine estates though, so which would you recommend for views, things to see, lunch, chilling out & the odd glass of vino?

Thanks.

Hi Margaret

There are several wine areas in the western Cape and hundreds of wineries!

I did make a suggestion to you in a previous post on your day trip to Hermanus, that there are wineries in the Hemelen Arde Valley that you can visit on the trip.

Closest to Cape Town is Constantia, the oldest wine growing area in Cape Town. This is a great historic area, with houses and museums to visit, aswell as some superb restaurants for lunch.

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are the other 2 well known regions and worthy of a day trip. Amazing scenery and again some very good lunch venues

Then there is Paarl, wellington, Durbanville, Robertson, Elgin etc.....

So maybe decide where you would like to visit and we can give some advise on wineries to visit

Lisa, thanks for your quick response.

We're visiting Kirstenbosch one day - so maybe the Constantia area - also travelling along R62, so around Worcester, Robertson to Montagu area would fit in with current plans. There are just too many to choose from without help.

Regards

Margaret

Hi Margaret

A very good idea to visit the Constantia wineries and Kirstenbosch in one day

Have a look at the Constantia wine route website

www.constantiawineroute.co.za

Groot Constantia a good starting point and the oldest winery in SA (I think??). Apart from wine tasting, fantastic gardens and an old manor house to look around, with a very good exhibition of the history of the cape and slavery

Then Klein Constantia, Steenberg, Constantia Uitsig and Buiterwachting. All these also have good restaurants for a relaxing lunch stop and Buiterwachting do picnics.

Robertson area also has a good number of wineries to visit, with the added bonus that it is free here

I can recommend the following

Graham Beck - very wide ranage and bubbly

Rietvallei - for something different try their red muscadel

Springfield - very good sauvignon blancs (if you want to try before you go, you can get their special cuvee in Sainsburys and Waitrose, although I prefer the Life from Stone)

Bon Courage - good wide range, with some very good examples. Also good lunch spot at Cafe Maude

Arabella - relatively new winery and bias towards whites.

Bon Cap - organic range

Van Louveren - very average wines but very cheap. Worth a visit just to be shocked at the physical numbers of bottles that they bring you to taste!

Viljoensdrift - average wines but they do a boat trip doen the Breede River. Nice way to spend an hour with your lunch bought from the deli and a glass of wine

www.robertsonwinevalley.co.za

Hope this gives you some good ideas.

A trip to Stellenbosch is also worthwhile, not just for the wines, but for the amazing scenery and the town itself is good to walk around.
