5/6 Days Cape Town - itinerary advice

Hi Everyone

I'd really appreciate your thoughts/advice as we plan our 5/6 days 1st time visit to Cape Town in December. At the moment the 2 itineraries are attractive.

We want to avoid hiring a car if at all possible - only 1 of us (in a couple) has a driving licence but we don't have a car at home, haven't driven for 3 years, & hate driving! I've been reading on here about how car hire is really needed to get the most out of Cape Town, but are really hoping the below itineraries might be full/good enough to do without?

We love good food/wine/art/design/history/culture/scenery/doing things independently. We fancy a couple of 'quieter' days to end our trip. We've booked the 1st 3 nights at Cape Town Backpackers.

Option A

Day 1: arrive Cape Town at 6pm (arriving from Namibia) - transfer to City Bowl. Dinner & drinks.

Day 2: Cape Town sightseeing - walking tour, museums, Hop on hop off etc.

Day 3: Peninsula tour (organised tour - not ideal for us but would fit the bill time/sight-wise)

Day 4: Table Mountain hike, More Cape Town sightseeing (Camps Bay/Waterfront?) - transfer to Franschoek for dinner. Stay in Franschoek

Day 5: in Franschoek. Wine tasting/lunch/scenery/dinner. (possibly hiring bikes?)

Day 6: in Franschoek. Wine tasting/lunch/scenery. Transfer to airport to fly out 8.20pm

Option B

Day 1: arrive Cape Town at 6pm (arriving from Namibia) - transfer to City Bowl. Dinner & drinks.

Day 2: Cape Town sightseeing - walking tour, museums, Hop on hop off etc.

Day 3: Table Mountain hike, More Cape Town sightseeing (Camps Bay/Waterfront?)

Day 4: Train (or transfer) to Simon's Town. Explore Simon's Town & Boulder's Beach. Taxi to Cape Point/Cape of Good Hope (i read somewhere there's a Rikki shuttle that does this route - does anyone know if this is true?). somewhere good for lunch/dinner. Overnight in Simon's Town.

Day 5: Transfer Simon's Town to Franschoek. Wine tasting/scenery/dinner

Day 6: in Franschoek. Wine tasting/lunch/scenery. Transfer to airport to fly out 8.20pm

Thanks in advance for your comments!

Hi there

Your itinerary sounds good, but i will make a few changes to it, because of the weather that is also so unpredictable in Cape Town. I will also include Tour prices which most of the Tour Companies in Cape Town are trading under at the moment.

Day 01: Sounds good. Just relax and have dinner maybe in the Waterfront. You can take a taxi to and from the Waterfront. Taxi's charge R8-R10 per kilometre and from the Waterfront to your accommodation the price will be about R40.00 - R60.00.

Day 02: Table Mountain and Robbin Island is the things you want to get to do on the very first day. Again the weather in Cape Town can change very quickly. Both you can do on the Hop on Hop off bus, and very close to you is stop no.12 for the Red Route Hop on Hop off bus. I would suggest to start early in the morning, do the cable car, and then make your way to catch the fairy for the 1pm trip. The Cable Car opens at 8am. For more info about the Hop on Hop off bus service: www.citysightseeing.co.za

Day 03: You can do the Peninsula Tour at the cost of R690.00p.p. which includes entrance fees to certain places. You will get to do Cape Point with Cape of Good Hope, the penguins at bolders beach, Chapmans Peak Drive, Houtbay, Constantia, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, and also Siomons Town. The other option of taking the train from Cape Town to Simons Town can be done, and then from there you can walk to Bolders Beach, and then from Simons Town you then have to take a taxi to Cape Point, of which you then will have to pay for the entrancee fee and for the taxi. Both choices are possible.

Day 04: This day you can relax in the City a bit with a couple of visits to the museums, a walking tour threw the City, which you can do on your own. A walk to the SA Museum, Jewish Museum and Holocaust Centre, St. Geoge's Cathedral, The Company's Garden's, SA Cultural Museum, Green Market Square and also Bo Kaap Museum. The best about this tour is that you can do this from your Backpackers and back on your own.

Day 05: You can start you Wine Tour starting in Stellenbosch, maybe with the Cheetah Outreach Programme at Spier Wine Estate, and then make your way past a few Wine Estates on your way to Frasnchoek. Relax for the next 2days there.

Day 06: The afternoon make your way back to the Airport with a pck-up at 4pm, if it is a international flight. The drive from Franschoek to the Airport might take about 1h30min or less.

Hope this helps.

Regards

1. Just to emphasize what Hank said - please don't assume you can do Table Mountain on a particular day. Plan to do it the very first day you can BUT BE PREPARED TO LEAVE TIME THE OTHER DAYS IN CASE THE WEATHER DOES NOT COOPERATE.

2. Make sure that one of your days (can be done on the way to Peninsula, as Hank suggests, or even on the way to or back from wine tasting if you decide to do it) you include the botannical gardens. They are just terrific even if you're not much of a plant buff. You could spend anywhere from an hour to a half a day there.

3. As Hank intimates, taking two full days to sightsee within the city is really too much. Unless you want to spend a whole day doing museums, you will need less time in the city of Cape Town than you think. It really is pretty easy to get to the whole downtown area in a few hours, so don't expect to spend the kind of time you would just walking around a European city. I assume you have no interest in doing Robben Island or a Township Tour, but those would be something else you could try if you really want to spend more time right in and around the city.
