Cape Town with a Child - Hotels and Transportation

My wife and I are thinking of going to Cape Town for about a week and we have a 16 month old son.

Are there any hotels that might offer babysitting services for a day or two while we're there for a child that young?

Also, what is the best transportation? Is it best to rent a car, or is driving and parking in Cape Town a nightmare? Would we be better off walking and taking public transportation? When we have our son, we'll need to lug a car seat around if we're going to take taxis anywhere, so we'd like to avoid that. Just a little concerned about whether driving places (and parking) will be a gigantic, expensive hassle like it is in some other cities.

For you parking will be cheap. They dont charge everywhere . They charge in the centre of town and in shopping centres but otherwise there is plenty of parking. There was a similar question earlier about travelling with a small child. Perhaps you should do a "search" in the cape town forum and see if you can find the answers. Also in fact there are answers to all the other questions you asked as well. I am not sure about "baby sitting". Perhaps the 5 star hotels will have that facility. Perhaps when you find an hotel you fancy write and ask them if they do have the facility of baby sitters.

Hi there

I agree - hire a car. I think you can also hire a car seat as well. Parking is easy here.

We have many friends from overseas come visit us in Cape Town with their children and they use companies such as

www.supersitters.net

Bigger hotels will offer a baby sitting service. If you rent a villa, look for one that is child friendly, in other words if they are on the mountain slopes with steep grounds and stairs, do they have safety gates for the children and are the grounds/pool easily accessible or can they be closed off.

A lot of villa agencies have baby sitters on their books.

We have travelled to Cape Town since our eldest son was 3 months old. I would definitely hire a car. The car hire company can provide a car seat and we find it much easier to leave a buggy etc in the car. Driving around Cape Town is very easy and we've never found parking a problem.

Most of the bigger hotels offer babysitting and it's usually ladies who work in the hotel (e.g. receptionists). To be honest we haven't used them much as my aunt lives in Cape Town, but we have in other hotels along the Garden Route.

I agree that you should contact the hotels you are interested in, in advance, to see if they can provise babysitting services. I've certainly used such services in Jo'burg in the past.

I did use Supersitters (as per the link above) once in an emergency and the lady they sent us for the evening was wonderful!

Definitely hire a car. I would maybe look into hiring any baby equipment you need once you arrive from a specialist company. In particular, I've found that the quality of baby carseats in SA from the established carehire companies is rather variable.

Hi there

I also agree that you should rent a car for your stay in Cape Town, it will make things way much easier for you to travel around. Just a tip, on your arrival, rather book a airport transfer than arriving and still have to go and collect your car with the little one. You can have the car brought to your hotel including the bay seat and have no hassle.
