Thanks Nippers, this is on our route so will give it a go. Would really appreciate further assistance particularly around Cape Town. 3 nights hotel or apartments around £100 per night. Notice Cape Royale at waterfront is 5 star but very reasonably priced. Anyone with knowledge of this hotel could help. Also Camps Bay area for 3 nights at end of holiday. Knysna area for 3 nghts and game reserve for 3 nights either near Knysna or towards Port Elizabeth

Game reserve opt for one around PE. Which one will depend on your budget. if it is luxury you are looking for then Shamwari is your best bet, a bit more reasonably priced one would include Amakhala and then for budget and self-drive if you prefer this option Addo Elephant park. More info on the last one on www.sanparks.co.za

Other to consider include Kwande and Kariega.

Game Reserve - definitely go near Port Elizabeth

Bottom end is staying in Addo Elephant National Park, which you could do for 1 of your 3 nights, if you find the private reserves are a bit pricey for the whole time. Although some reserves give special rates for longer 3 night stays.

Reasonably priced is probably Amakhala, one of their 3* or 4* offerings. They have 5* options as well, but they are obviously more expensive. Other reasonable options are Kariega, Sibuya (quite small) and Schotia (also small but does some of its drives in Addo). Pumba is a little pricier and Shamwari and Gorah are probably more than you want to pay.

When comparing rates, note some places include pretty much all drinks and others don't.

Great stuff "lamlee" helps a lot. Getting there fast. Still like some help in Cape Town area. Appreciate it is a massive area hence why I would like to drill it down based on recommendations.

For 3 nights at a safari lodge, one of the best options is Pumba Safaris as they have a pay 2 stay 3 offer, and their wildlife is exceptional the white lions are amazing.

They are located an hour from Port Elizabeth in the opposite direction from Knysna.

For Cape Town I always like the City Bowl, there are some excellent restauarants, that are owner run and 1/2 the price if the Waterfront, for accommodation Parker Cottage is excellent which is borne out by it's TA rating.

Why not drive one way and fly back the other, it would make the journey much better and save a lot of driving.

Thanks Colin. Had not considerred the drive / fly option. Could be sound advice. If flying back from Port Elizabeth, how would I best plan a 14 night, 15 day tour. What about :

3 nights Cape Town central area. 1 night Oudtshoorn are, 3 nights Knysna or Plettenberg Bay, 3 nights game reserve around Port Elizabeth. Return flight to Cape Town and 4 nights at beach area. Had originally planned to return via coast road. What would I be missing if I did not. I assume I could still do Hermanus, Stellenbosch and Paarl from Cape Town at either end of trip.

We also have very good beaches along the Garden Route, Port Elizabeth also some lovely beaches and the water is much warmer than Camps Bay as we are on the Indian Ocean.

Camps Bay is a 10-20 minute drive from the center of Cape Town, so maybe you don't have to stay at both.

I would squeze in at least one night to visit the Addo National Park, where you will see loads of elephants and normally much more, you drive yourself and it is a complelety different and much less expensive than the private reserves.

With the private reserves you have a full on safari and are not restricted to the roads as you are in Addo and you will get much better viewing of the predators.

There is a 15.30 flight out of Port Elizabeth designed to connect with the international flights which leave in the evening.

So spend more time in Cape Town at start of holiday and head out after say 6 days along garden route etc to PE. Leaving there on last afternoon in time to catch homeward bound flight to London. What about 1 way car hire. Does that not incurr a rather hefty additional cost as not returning to area where collected ?
