Driving from Pretoria to Cape Town

I'd like advice on where to make two stops on the way down to Cape Town from Pretoria. We have two young children so would like to break the trip up. Thought about Karoo National Park for one stop.

Hi Tia

Pretoria to the Karoo NP is roughly a 1000 km, so it will take the whole day to drive.

another option will be to stop over at the Gariep dam (South Africa's largest Dam) first. It is about 650 km from Pretoria. There is a very nice hotel called "De Stijl".

The Karoo national Park is about 350 km from the Gariep dam for your second stop. This will give you more time to enjoy the park, before heading to Cape Town the next day.

Hope it helps.

Warning: This is probably the most boring road in South Africa!

Gariep dam is probably a good choice. There is very little between Bloemfontein and Colesberg. Reasonably priced accommodation here, where the kids can run around. http://www.forevergariep.co.za/

Only other choice could be safarinow.com/go/… but that is a bit close to Pretoria.
