Best Area of Cape Town for a Fun Vacation

Hello! Does anyone have a recommendation on which Cape Town area to stay overnight during a 4 or 5-night vacation for my girlfriend and I? Do tourists usually prefer to stay in Cape Town city, or is another part of the area a better value, like Hermanus or areas of the wine lands?

We are looking to stay in an area that is:

1) A good value,

2) Easy to get to/from everything, and

3) An area that is walking-friendly to nearby sights and restaurants.

We will have a car, and can drive ourselves.

We are adventurous, love to explore, and already made a list of things we want to do:

- Whale watching in Hermanus

- Penguins in Betty's Bay

- Wineries in Paarl, Hermanus area, and maybe other nearby towns

- Table Mountain

- Cape of Good Hope

- Robben Island

- Walking around and seeing the sights.

Thanks! Look forward to hearing your suggestions on where to focus our hotel searches.

To clarify, we have 5 nights total, and don't want the hassles of switching hotels every night. We would consider switching hotels once, like maybe 2 nights in Hermanus and 3 nights in Cape Town city...does that sound reasonable, or is there another area we should look at? We are looking for a nice quiet area to relax, but centralized enough to do activities if we want. Looking for a good value.

You don't specify what time of year you wish to visit Cape Town....that makes a huge difference, price-wise.

High/Peak season (November - March) or mid/low season?

For fun I would stay close to Waterfront (Green Point accommodation is considerably less expensive than V & A) or on Atlantic Seaboard (Sea Point, Green Point, Bantry Bay, Camps Bay).

Suggest you take a look on www. booking.com what is available and select four star accommodation - self-catering/Bed and Breakfast would be less expensive than a hotel and provides better value.

You can easily do a day trip to Hermanus - it takes about 2 hours along the scenic route (Clarens Drive) and 1 1/2 hours via Sir Lowry's Pass. Checking in and out of hotels is time-consuming and with only five nights at your disposal, you would need:

One day for Table Mountain, Waterfront and orientation

One day for Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Boulders (penguins)

One day visit to Winelands (Franschhoek/Stellenbosch/Paarl)

One day for Hermanus/Overberg
