SIM card Venice

We will be arriving in Venice at the airport and staying at a hotel in the San Marco area. Where is the best place to buy a SIM card? We just need a phone to call within Italy and for an emergency if we need to call the United States. We have an unlocked phone that we can just insert a SIM card. We will not be using the phone much at all. We just want to have it "in case" we need to make a call within Italy or to the United Staes. Many thanks.

There's a TIM store on the far side of the Rialto Bridge, here's the exact location: http://tinyurl.com/n4g9734

There's also a WIND store very close to TIM store, on the left side of the street when descending from Rialto Bridge, and a VODAFONE store at the bottom of Rialto Bridge on the opposite side.

Is one preferable to the other? We travel to Italy several times a year and plan to use this SIM card whenever we return. Is Tim, Vodafone or Wind better than the other?

They resemble each other... assuming you don't need an "all inclusive" rate, compare these "basis" national fares:

Wind al secondo: €0,29/minute, €0,15/SMS

Wind Super senza scatto: €0,29/minute, €0,09/SMS

Vodafone al secondo new: €0,23/minute, €0,13/SMS

Vodafone 15: €0,15/minute, €0,15/SMS, surcharge of €0,18 per call

TIM 12: €0,12/minute, €0,15/SMS, surcharge of €0,18 per call

TIM ZeroScatti: €0,29/minute, €0,15/SMS

TIM a secondi: €0,29/minute, €0,07/SMS

Thank you so much for your detailed information. Do you know if any of these companies offer prepaid, "tourist friendly" plans? We would only be using the phone to confirm reservations and make any emergency calls back to the united States.

Many of those rates are doable as "pay-as-you-go", with a small charge at the beginning (between €10 and €25) including a starter credit, and then you add as much credit as you think you will need. When your credit is up, you can top them off at many Tabacchi (tobacconists), phone stores, or even many supermarkets. Some require a small monthly charge for part of discounted rates, which can be deactivated before you leave and reactivated upon your return next trip (or another discount if a different offer is then active).
