Public Transport Mestre to Venice.

We will be arriving in Marco Polo Airport on 5th of August around midday, hiring a car and staying in Best Western Plus Quid Hotel Mestre for two nights after which we will be driving to Lake Bled Slovinia for a wedding.

We intend using the local bus service to get into Venice for the two days we will be in Mestre , my question is, does the bus from Mestre to Venice leave you close to the centre of Venice or do you have to also get a Vaporetto to get to the centre?

What tickets for transport will we need to get, will 2 return tickets for the bus be sufficient or should we get a 36 hour joint bus and vaporetto pass for our limited time in Venice.

Thank you in advance,

Mark

The bus will take you to Piazzale Roma, at the northern edge of Venice. This is the furthest that road vehicles can get into Venice. You would probably want to take a vaporetto to get from there to San Marco.

As a single vaporetto ticket costs E7, an ACTV transport pass would probably be worthwhile.

You will not need a car while you are staying in Mestre. You could probably save some money by picking up from Piazzale Roma before you leave for Lake Bled.

Thank's sydneynick for the prompt reply, It would seem that our best option would be to buy an ACTV 36 hour pass to cover both bus and vapporeto journey's , we will then have the option to use the vappereto to visit maybe other islands if we so wished, though with the limited time we have I think we will be well occupied exploring Venice itself, we intend going off the beaten tourist track and get lost in Venice.

It seems that there is little advantage in buying the ACTV on line and we will probably buy them at the airport .

As for having the car from the airport,we weighed up the advantages of convienence of having the car as opposed to savings we would make hiring one two days later, and decided to have the car, we can then use it for shopping in the local supermarket for provisions for trip, using it in the evenings to go into Mestre town for choice of restaurants,as we are a little bit out of Mestre town in the hotel we are staving in and restaurant selection is I belive limited around the hotel area, also we intend on the morning we are heading towards Slovinia via Trieste where we will stay for 1 night on getting the first breakfast at 6.30am and heading of as soon as possible after that,so I think it would be best to have the car outside the hotel.

Thanks again sydneynick.

Be careful which bus you board - the transport pass covers ACTV buses, but not those operated by ATVO.

If you buy the pass, it makes sense to use the vaporetti back to P. Roma. However, walking in is very interesting. It can take 2 hours or more, because you'll get lost a few times, but it's an interesting walk, through some lovely squares. There are also some very nice cafes to stop at, plus lots of shops.

You really need the boat back, though, since you can't predict how long the walk will take.

If you don't buy the transport pass, or it runs out, there are trains every two minutes or so from Mestre to Venice.

Thanks for that exgordie,I did not realise that there are two different bus company's I will look out for that. On the Wednesday morning we intend getting up early to visit the rialto market so we will probably get the vapperetto in to st marks s square on both days of our visit, after the market we will explore the city, probably we will do the basilica on our first day there and maybe the doges palace.
