Feb 2014 trip to SLT.

I've been to Tahoe at lease a dozen times but only a couple of times in the winter. A co-worker is going to take her parents and children and brother and sister there in late Feb and I had a couple of questions.

1. I realize that this depends on the amount of snowfall, but as a general rule, how far can you drive up Hwy 89 before they close the road with the gates?

2. Do the paddlewheel boats operate in the winter?

3. Is there much else to see or do in the winter at SLT other than ski and go to the casinos? I think the state parks on the western side of the lake are probably closed in the winter.

Thanks,

Kent

Wow, I am impressed that you have visited Lake Tahoe that many times from Georgia. You are probably quite familiar with the area already. I will try to answer your questions.

1. I am not sure where the gates are on Hwy 89, but I believe they must be north of Camp Richardson, but I am not sure. From the north side, I believe the closurer gates are at D.L. Bliss state park. Hopefully someone will have better information. The section of Hwy 89 is usually the first to close during a storm. I am sure you have driven this stretch of road and can understand why the road would close. Of course Hwy 20 on the east shore is usually open, so you have another path to the North Shore.

2. Yes, the big padlewheel boats run during the winter. It can be a beautiful ride with the snow along the shore and mountains or if low clouds cover the lake you might find something else to do.

3. There are a lot of other winter time activities. You can ice skate at Heavenly Village, there is a sleigh ride and snowmobiling in the field just east of MontBleu. There are many snowmobiling areas. You might be interested in the one at Zepher Cove as they head off to the high country. Many other places just go around in a circle. If you want to travel a little from Lake Tahoe they offer dog sled rides. The beauty of Lake Tahoe is great in the winter during a clear day.

Have a great time. February is usually a peak snow period for Lake Tahoe, but who knows about this upcoming winter.

Too late to edit my post, but it is Hwy 28, not Hwy 20 on the east shore. The state parks on the west shore close for the winter. The west shore seems to get more snow in the Lake Tahoe basin.

Thanks, CASweede. Been to Yosemite a couple of times and love it. If fact I love from Death Valley up Hwy 395 to SLT. I'm an avid amateur photographer and there are many photo opps along the way and on some of the roads off 395.

We were at Yosemite in June 2012 for our anniversary and had a very special dinner in Oakhurst at Erna's Elderberry House. One of my best all-time meals. Here's a link.
