Auckland and BOI

Hi

I've been reading all the posts and checked distances and have more or less decided that our 9 days in North Island at the end of February will be spent exploring out from Auckland and up to Bay of Islands. We like walking, wine and food - I imagine there is more than enough to keep us occupied but just wanted to check. We plan to fly in, stay in Auckland for 3 days then head north for 4 days and then back to Auckland. Just want to experience a bit of NZ and not spend ages on the road what do you think?

Northland and the Bay of Islands is a wonderful region to explore late February. Settled weather, warmer sea temps, fruit and vines ripening, long hours of daytime, with daylight saving still remaining.

Here's a suggestion for your Northland visit:-

1 night- Whangarei coast or Whangarei Heads - explore beaches and coastal walking trails. Sample regional wines, enjoy a meal at the Town Basin or at award-winning a'Deco in Whangarei city. Whangarei about 2.5 hours drive from Auckland city. Tutukaka Coast or Whangarei Heads are a further 35/40 minutes drive from the city.

2 nights - BOI staying in Kerikeri or Russell for bush or coastal walks, historical sights, sub-tropical atmosphere. There are some wonderful wines, gardens and artisan foods produced around Kerikeri. BOI is about 1.25 hours drive from Whangarei.

1 night - Hokianga harbour for the Waipoua Forest. Lovely remote area of NZ full of interesting history and distinctive geography. Visit Matakohe Museum set near the Kaipara harbour to learn about the pioneering days for Northland and its kauri trees and gum digging era. A little over an hour's drive from Kerikeri to Omapere.

The road trip from Hokianga to Auckland city via Kaipara harbour/North-West motorway takes about 3.5 hours. Detour to Muriwai beach to view the gannet colony. Good opportunity to sample Auckland wines in the immediate area.

During your visit to Auckland, hop across to Waiheke Island renowned for its boutique wines, series of coastal walking trails, beautiful beaches and bays and great food. Several tours available on the island or as a ferry-tour combo.
