close to Auckland airport --place to get over jet lag

Suggestions please for restful, scenic place short distance from Auckland airport. We will be very jet-lagged but prefer to pick up the rental car and drive to nearby beach or other nice area with quiet accomodations where we can recover from all the travel. Area with lots of walking opportunities and scenic much preferred; not wanting to go into city of Auckland. Thank you.

Somewhere near the Hunua Ranges could be a good option for you, it is under an hours drive from the airport with lots of nice walks and scenery. The Clevedon website should be able to assist with accommodation:

An area that is about 30 minutes drive from the airport, and is a lovely seaside village with a few cafes and a great beach, is Maraetai (quite close to the Clevedon area mentionned above). Both Maraetai and Clevedon would be perfect for a relaxing day or 2 to get over jetlag. Maraetai is on the water, Clevedon is about a 10-15 minute drive inland, and has a lovely village atmosphere with cafes, market & interesting shops.

There are a couple of nice Regional parks where you can walk and amazing views out to Waiheke from Maraetai.

Clevedon has a number of accommodation options, and Maraetai has a couple, although they are not well advertised.

I have to admit to bias but you may wish to consider the Waitakere Ranges. on Auckland's wild west coast an hour from the airport. Here you will find regenerating forest, waterfalls, black sand beaches some 250 kms of walking tracks so plenty to choose from and even in January and February not too many people.

To some extent it depends on which direction you will be heading once you have had a couple of days to relax. If you are heading south or east then Maraetai would be a good option. If you are heading north then the Waitakere Ranges or the Rural area around Kumeu and Muriwai may be better.

I can't imagine flying from the US to New Zealand and then starting to drive a car right away. Remember you will be driving on the left which you may not have done before.

I know how we felt after flying to Hong Kong. It was all we could do to get on the train into the city from the airport and then a taxi to our hotel. It is a longer flight with more time zones to go through to New Zealand.

We plan on taking some kind of public transit or a shuttle or taxi to our hotel after arriving in Aukland.
