My colleagues and I are attending a conference in Auckland and will have 3 days and a hire car afterwards to see wineries or other attractions .Would value any suggestions.

There are quite a few companies that run wine tours on Waiheke Island, some with private boats to get to the island and others that wil meet you at the ferry terminal.

The Kumeu region has some fantastic wineries, I particularly like Westbrook and Kerr Farm. There is also the Hallertau Brew Bar for beer tasting and lunch.

Matakana is a bit further out of town but makes a lovely day trip, the Brick Bay Sculpture trail is well worth a visit - they also do wine tasting and cheese platters.

I can recommend the Villa Maria Vineyard near the airport!! You drive through an industrial area and then, out of nowhere, is a vineyard!! It is beautiful and once there you'd never realise you were in such a built up area. Even if you go to other vineyards a stop here is worthwhile :)
