3 nights in Auckland , what is there to do there?

My fiance and I will be flying to Auckland first from the U.S. and arriving in 2 weeks. We've booked one activity thus far which was "Discover Waitomo" to see the glowworm caves.

Besides that I am really interested in what there is to do in Auckland. I plan on doing a hot air baloon one morning. What is the nightlife like?? I am a dancer so I always ask this. My fiance is a computer programmer so he is more into 'games". So technology wise is there anything neat going around?

Where are the places to eat? What is there to eat? I have a low low immune system due to a kidney transplant (yeah, i know) and i am hesitant about new foods but i travel like crazy.

I believe our hotel is in the city. It's by Auckland Downtown according to the map. Any advice??

Why are you having 3nights in Auckland. most people don't visit NZ for the cities. Waitomo Caves is a long way from AKL ( around 3 hr each way). It is nearer to Rotorua and people usually visit the Caves on their way to Rotorua from AKL.

Usual day trips/activities in AKL include Waiheke Island ( wine-tasting); Rangitoto Island -climb a volcano; ferry to Devonport; wild beaches on the West Coast eg Piha. The museum & Art Gallery are both worth visiting too.

Many restaurants clustered in the Viaduct Basin & Wynyard Quarter. Seafood is popular esp NZ farmed salmon. Don't miss trying lamb too!

I suggest you buy a good guide book as your questions indicate you don't know what you want to do.

Auckland restaurants have a food grading system and its displayed publically. A is good, B is okay and C/D isn't good. As a personal preference I only eat at A grade restaurants and cafes. My husband has a rule - no plastic chairs!

There are bars and nightclubs in the city. There is a newish place opened in the downtown waterfront called Wynard Quarter, you access it via the Viaduct which is next to the harbour. Its got lots of cafes and restaurants and takes you to the seafood market.

Definately go to Waiheke via ferry and do some wine tasting. Visit the Auckland Museum (see a bit of our history) Auckland Zoo is great, and visit some of our lovely beaches. There are lots of half day tours, and there's a tourist bus, that takes you around to all the local attractions.

Enjoy your stay in NZ.

I just returned from the most fabulous vacation in NZ. Four days was in Auckland. We stayed close to the Viaduct and Sky Tower at Quay West. We took two ferry rides that I can recommend. One was to Devonport and is a quick 10 minutes to this darling Victorian looking town. We took an hour long bus tour that drove you around the town with good photo ops, then had lunch and shopped. The other day we went to Waiheke Island and took a bus into town and a taxi to Mudbrick Winery. It was a highlight.

Talking to some that did the "Glow Worm" tour, they said it was cheesy. I didn't do it, so I don't know for sure, but that is what I heard. The other highlight was driving to the West side beaches like where The Piano was filmed. All I can say is Wow!

As far as nightlife, oh yes there is nightlife. Wed and Thurs nights is called Clubbing nights. You won't have a tough time finding places to go by just walking around. The most popular seemed to be this club near the ferry building. The line was out the door. The Skycity area is pretty busy too. We were there on a Friday night and I heard music and cheering so something fun was going on. There's a casino in the Skycity too.

I must say the Kiwis are the friendliest and nicest people I have ever met in my travels. Have a great time. You will not want to leave.

We loved eating at the Viaduct restaurants. Lamb of course was my number one pick to eat, fish is popular and the beef is terrific. You won't starve.

Hi

You do well to spend 3 nights in Auckland. Arguably the best of Auckland is to be found in the surrounding area and whilst I have to admit to bias as I live there I would say that no visit to Auckland could be considered complete without a visit to the Waitakere Ranges and Auckland's west coast beaches notably Karekare, Piha, Bethells and just to the north of the ranges Muriwai and its gannet colony - well worth a visit. If you are not going to have a rental vehicle it is possible to do half day or day trips. Have a look at:

www.coast2coastnz.com

For places to eat our favourites which we have no hesitation in recommending are The Refreshment Room on Scenic Drive and and Artisan Winery in Oratia:

Yes the beaches mentioned above were wonderful. We took a picnic lunch and ate at the beach called KareKare. The other beautiful spot was the beach where The Piano was filmed. We took a nice walk to get there but it was so worth it. Its a nice drive to the westside beaches from Auckland and it only too about an hour.

Hi

Karekare Beach was actually where The Piano was flimed - before our time here but some of our neighbours were extras. There is no commercial activity at Karekare i.e. no shops or cafes - just nature as you find it.

At Piha there is a shop, cafe, takeaway on the beach, and places to eat in the evening (Returned Services Association, Surf Life Saving Club and bowling club - they are clubs but welcome visitors)

At Muriwai there are a couple of cafes and you will go past several of Aucklands very good wineries on the way.

Just be aware that the Gold A-E grading system addresses health and cleanliness and nothing specific to do with the quality of the food. You can get some pretty unappealing meals at A graded restaurants and cafes.
