3 nights in Vancouver

We're doing 7 nights on Vancouver Island, followed by an Alaskan Cruise, before heading back up from Seattle to Vancouver for our last 3 nights at the end of August 2012. Would like to see a bit of the city, but not stay there. Don't plan on hiring a car. Ideally we'd like to be somewhere scenic, by water or forest with views from the accommodation. To be near enough to the city to access by sea bus or something would be great....is staying in Deep Cove a good option ? close enough to explore the city for a day and hike elsewhere for another day ? Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

So...we managed to cash in on Virgin Atlantic’s 50% reduction in flights a couple of weeks ago (£498/person direct from Heathrow) the drop in price only lasted a day. We decided to extend our stay on Vancouver Island, arriving 2 nights earlier at Eagle Cove in Sooke. This has got me thinking about exploring the island a little more as we have 9 nights at our Sooke base. Would it be worth driving to the Pacific Rim National Park and staying in a B&B for one night, as Tofino seems special, as does Ucluelet. Any suggestions for a day trip out of Sooke if we head off at dawn, would it be worth driving to the Tofino area and staying one night before returning later the next day ?...how long is the drive to the Pacific Rim National Park / Tofino or even Cathedral Grove ?

I think if you stick to 9 nights at your Sooke Base you will be restricting yourself to just a small part of Vancouver Island.

I would suggest you consider 3 nights Sooke, 3 nights Tofino and 3 nights Telegraph Cove to take a grizzly bear tour.

It takes 2 hours to get to Nanaimo, 2.5 hours to get to Cathedral Grove, 5 hours to get to Tofino and 7 hours to drive to Telegraph Cove, all from Victoria.

The places you would be able to visit from Sooke would be the Pacific Marine Circle Route, Saanich Peninsula, one or two of the Gulf Islands, Cowichan Valley wineries, Duncan, Chemainus, Nanaimo and perhaps as far north as Parksville/Cathedral Grove/Coombs, even Strathcona Park before needing to head back for the night in Sooke. Much better to pick up stakes for 2 other locations. Tofino needs 3 nights/2 full days to appreciate the area. 9 nights is a great amount of time to really get to know several areas of the Island.

Thanks for this...really helpful. We've decided to keep our base in Sooke rather than spend time on the road, accommodation was already booked at Eagle Cove, so we'll get out to see as much of the island as possible. We need plenty of chill time as this holiday is very much needed (which one's aren't ?:) and the cruise should add a bit of variety.

The Pacific Marine Circle Route looks perfect for....you mention the Gulf Islands, which ones would be good to visit ?
