Wondering about wintering in Osoyoos

Hi, we are wondering what the winter weather is like in Osoyoos??

My husband is thinking maybe the Okanogan Valley would be a nice winter retreat. We live in Northwestern Ontario, where winter is cold and long.

We have thought of the Arizona but thought we would rather be in Canada and could even pick up part time jobs.

Thanks

Hopefully someone who lives in Osoyoos will reply...if you check www.wunderground.com you will see that it is generally sunny..go to the site and then go to trip planner and put in Osoyoos and dates.

I do know from friends whio lived in Kelowna that it was NOT sunny.. they were surprised by the cloud cover that often hung over that part of the valley. As Osoyoos is more in the desert it might be better.

It's warmer than Northern Ontario but still not easy- many local business owners shut down for the season and head to Mexico.

Part time jobs in construction maybe but other than that not much going on even the streets have been rolled up and put in storage for the next 'Golden 100 Days'.

Have you scoped out real estate prices there? (It's not cheap!) www.mls.ca

In the past few years Osoyoos has been getting more and more popular with snowbirds from the Prairies and eastern Canada.

Several hotels offer monthly accommodation -- check www.safaribeachresort.com. Furnished suites can be had for around $550-$650 per month.

Not sure about the part-time jobs, but there is a Tim Horton's there, so you never know......

Hi, I have lived in Osoyoos for the past 5 years. The winters are very mild compared to Northern Canada, usually around the freezing mark. It is a very popular destination for snowbirds in the winter and vacationers in the summer. There is a wide range of good accommodations available. You can check with the South Okanagan Chamber of Commerce or Destination Osoyoos for a list.

Getting a part time job should be easy as there is a real labour shortage in the tourism industry here. Yes, Tim Hortons is hiring as well.

The lake froze over the last 2 years. But definitely warmer than most of Canada. Try VRBO or Vacationrentals.com for snowbird properties

Interesting replies to this topic.

We are in the process of planning a vacation to this area this summer - in the hopes of scoping out what might become our Canadian Snowbird Destination - we would like to travel between BC and Apache Juntion, Arizona once we actually retire - but it is nice to know that if we so desire we could get part time jobs in BC - certainly can't do that in US.

Osoyoos had been very cold the past two years. But compared to Northwestern Ontario, it is great! It is certainly not Arizona, but the change of season is there, and you can escape for a winter holiday. Try renting for a few months next winter to decide!
