Revelstoke to Merritt to Vancouver, what's to see in between

We are travelling from Banfff to Revelstoke, staying one night in Revelstoke then travelling and staying in Merritt for one night. What shouldn't we miss in between. Also between Merritt and Vancouver? Thanks in advance.

Make sure you see all that Revelstoke has to offer. And just west of there, you might want to stop at Craigellachie to see the location of the Last Spike. Near Field, you will find the Spiral Tunnels viewpoint where you might see the front of the train coming out of the mountain while the rear of the train is just entering the mountain. The storyboards explain it all.

Assuming you will take the Coquihalla Hwy 5 between Merritt and Hope, you will be on the commuter route. It's undeveloped for both amenities and sightseeing because it's meant to get people from A to B without much fuss.

If you wanted to take Hwy 7 from Hope, you might be interested in the Benedictine Abbey at Mission with its excellent artwork/sculpture and view from the trail lookout. Something a little different.

Will you take Hwy 97 and then 97C? or continue to Kamloops and then south to Merritt? Depending on that, you might stop in Armstrong at the Village Cheese.

Hi suelovesholidays;

The “Last Spike” refers to the completion of the trans-Canada railroad.

To speed construction, the railroad was started from both ends – from central Canada in the east and from the Pacific coast in the west. The location of the “Last Spike” is where the two crews met in 1885, and drove “the last spike” completing construction.

The Last Spike is where the eastbound track laying crew met the westbound track laying crew for the Canadian Pacific Railway to hammer in the last spike. It is a small stop, almost anticlimactic. It is moment of reflection because it points to how the westbound crew laid about 4000 km of track mainly across the Canadian prairies and the eastbound crew laid about 700 km of track mainly through 4 N-S mountain ranges. It tells you what the terrain was like in BC. But it did the trick for getting British Columbia into the Confederation of Canada in 1871. The deal was - join Canada and we'll deliver a railroad. Interestingly the financing was mainly done by American investors. The CPR hotels along the way are all similar in appearance. Hotel Vancouver, Empress Hotel in Victoria, Banff Springs Hotel, Chateau Lake Louise. A string of them across Canada are now part of the Fairmont chain.

IMO, the route down through the Okanagan toward Kelowna has more going for it.

How much time are you allowing to get from Merritt to Vancouver? There are several routes. See a map of BC on google maps or www.drivebc.com.

From Merritt you could head East and take the Exit for Hwy 5A at Aspen Grove to Princeton then drive the Hope -Princeton Hwy to Hope then on to Vancouver through Manning Park. It's a nice drive both the Hwy 5A and Hwy 3.

You could take the fastest, but most boring route from Merritt to Hope then on to Vancouver. Hwy 5 the "Coquihalla".

Or you could head west from Merritt on Hwy 8 to Spences Bridge, then south towards Lytton Hwy 1 and on to Vancouver. It's a nice drive along the Fraser River and you could visit Hells Gate. Also rather than heading through Hope you could take Hwy 7 on the other side of the River and see Harrison Hot Springs. area.

Or you could really go around about and take the Hwy 97C from Merritt to the Okanangan - it comes out at Peachland, then head south to Penticton then on to Princeton and the same route from Princeton to Vancouver.

As you have allowed lots of time, I presume you are planning to play tourist along the way. We left Revelstoke last summer around 3 pm and got home that evening, so its easy enough to get to Vancouver that same day. Honestly, I'd allow two nights in Revelstoke - lots to see around there with the national park, the railway museum, and then just head straight for Vancouver, but I'd go via Cache Creek and down the Fraser Canyon. The highway from Kamloops to Merritt is tedious.

If you are committed to that route, then I would advise going along highway 8 to Spences Bridge and down the Fraser Canyon from there. There's lots of good white water rafting in this area if you want to take a couple of hours to do a trip. Plenty of tourism stops in the south canyon - Hells Gate, Alexandra Bridge, Hope and the Othello Tunnels, Harrison Hot Springs. Then you are into the Fraser Valley, and again, there are plenty of interesting and worthwhile stops.
