Accommodation recommendations

My wife and I are travelling from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia to Port Alberni for a wedding in late July 2009 and will need some accommodation for a 7 - 10 days.

Ideally, because we will be in Prota Alberni for more than a couple of nights we would like something that is comfortable and has a separate bedroom and also some kitchen or food prep facilities.

Any ideas?

I've stayed at most of them one time or t'other and the best overall deal is

While the town itself is somewhat unprepossessing the surrounding area is literally a wonderland of outdoor opportunity (and not just the west coast of the island as someone will recommend shortly).

http://www.rainbirdexcursions.com/ for some info

Heck they even have a winery!

We had a wedding in PA three or four years ago. I like the Chamber website for info:

We were originally booked in to the Best Western Barclay. They were renovating at the time, so a bit of a disappointment for us, but over all a nice enough place. The Bride and her family had a room at the Greenport, and we actually switched to that hotel. Also a pleseant enough place.

Something we did was a trip out on the Lady Rose and then a couple of nights at the West Coast Magic B&B in Bamfield. I LOVE that trip, and Bamfield is so beautiful and quaint.

Port Alberni is not much of a place, as mentioned above, but I do think it's a great location from which to explore both the west and east coast of the island.

Many Thanks for your suggestions. Looks like we might stay at the Somass Motel on your recommendation and also a recommendation from the Bride's mother.

Have started to look at some activities in and around PA as well

Hi there Thirko:

I agree with the other person who wrote. The Somass Motel & RV is a neat clean place. It has one or two bedrooms separate from a small kitchen. I'm sure you will be very happy with this choice. http://www.somass-motel.ca/

Some other things to do around there are a trip on the Lady Rose, http://www.ladyrosemarine.com/index.html, a day trip with Rainbird Excursions, http://rainbirdexcursions.com/, seeing the Martin Mars Waterbombers, http://www.martinmars.com/(They would have been a big help in your forest fires), and Cathedral Grove.

As you can guess, I live in Port Alberni and work in the tourism industry.
