Travelling from Whistler

Hi there. Planning an itinary for our trip to Canada August/September next year and would like to be able to get from Whistler to Campbell River without the long drive and ferry trip. I would like to leave our hire car in Whistler and then catch a plane if possible to Campbell River.

Does anyone know if there is a flight that can be caught from Whistler area with full baggage (so not a sea plane size) and manage to get to Campbell River without the long driving times?

I plan to stay in Campbell River overnight before heading off to Telegraph Cove for a 3 nights and do a bear tour etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

http://www.harbour-air.com/ This airline will get you from Vancouver Harbour to Nanaimo harbour - don't know about north of Nanaimo.

I don't know of any airline flying from Whistler to Campbell River.

Whistler is, not unexpectedly, in the middle of some pretty serious mountains, which prevents the construction of things like safe runways for large planes.

I don't know about Squamish, about an hour south of Whistler, but I would expect they have a small regional airport where you might pick up a charter. For a regular flight, I would expect that you'll have to come back to Vancouver.

I would also do some research on the car pick up/drop off points and resulting one-way drop off charges, which can be astronomical!

You may, after a bit of comparative research, find that the hassles involved in arranging and paying for one-way car rentals in combination with the airfares will leave you thinking that you may as well just drive the whole way. It's a nice trip, and the ferry crossing breaks it up nicely.

Thanks for your info and advice. I have now decided to drive back to Vancouver from Whistler then catch a plane from Vancouver to Campbell River. Much less time involved doing this and great heads up for the car hire one way info.

I've now revised the itinary:-

arrive Vancouver 14th for 3 nights

catch the Rocky Mountaineer to Jasper (kamloops 1 night and Jasper 1 night)

pick up a car in Jasper drive to Banff - stay 3 nights

Drive to Sunpeaks - stay one night

Drive to Whister - stay 3 nights

Drive to Vancouver - drop of the car and catch plane to Campbell River - pick up new car - 1 night Campbell River

Drive to Telegraph Cove - stay 2 nights

Drive to Tofino - stay 2 nights

Drive to Victoria - stay 2 nights

Drive to Vancouver - stay 3 nights then head home

Do you think this now sounds managable

Thanks so much for all your help
