American side or Canadian side?

My husband and almost 2 yr old daughter are planning a trip to the Thousand Islands. I've heard A-Bay is a great place to stay. Looking here, it seems Gananoque is an ideal choice as well? Which is more touristy, things to do/see (besides water tours), as well as which offers better water tours? Are we better off renting our own boat? Also, and recommendations of hotels would be appreciated! We're open to the area we stay in (even Kingston?), and would like to make the most of a long weekend. Thanks in advance!

As long as the adults have passports, or passport equivalent, I'd go over to the Canadian side...

Gananoque has Joel Stone beach with play structure and a splash pad sure to appeal to a child. There are also other parks, and a museum to visit that should work with a small child in tow.

I would stay in Gananoque. More to do and see on the Canadian side including side trips to Kingston, a trip to the Rideau Canal. Also, the U.S. $ provides a 20% premium.

Plenty of motels in Gananoque. Also boat cruises which visit both U.S. and Cdn attractions.

1000 Islands Tower on Hill Island between the U.S. and Canadian Spans of the international bridge.

Hotels in Gananoque for all the major chains. If you prefer a resort on the St. Lawrence River, the Glen House is really good.

Kingston, ON is 20 minutes away with lots of tourist attractions as well.

If you want to visit the Rideau Canal (World Heritage Site) go to Chaffey's Locks, or Jones Falls. Chaffey's Locks are more peaceful and serene. Jones Falls site of one of the largest stone arch dams in the world, along with a fortified lock station.
