Family fun summer ideas for Qualicum Beach/Parksville area

Hi, our family of 4 (kids are 10 and 12yrs) will be in the Qualicum beach/Parksville area for a week in late July, beginning of August this summer and would love some tips on not to miss things to do in the area. We have a kayak tour booked, but otherwise don't have much planned. I was wondering about seeing Horne Lake Caves, is it necessary to do a tour, or is the self-guided tour as good? Will there still be sand castles to see from the competition at Rathtrevor beach? Is it a good idea to have wet suits for swimming in the ocean there, or does it really warm up from the sun on the sand when the tide is out? Can anyone recommend a great sushi restaurant in the area? I know those are a lot of questions to answer, but I'm very grateful for any suggestions/answers. Thankyou!

I'll try and answer some of your questions, and hopefully others can chime in too.

1. I don't know about the caves, though I hope to go back this year.

2. The sandcastles are not at Rathtrevor, which is a provincial park, but at Parksville Beach, in town. Last summer, they had live entertainment too. Rathtrevor is certainly worth time, with a broad and sandy beach, and forest trails as well.

3. The water is quite warm at that time of the year, as the bay is very shallow.

4. We go to Sushi Ichi in Parksville, but there are others. There is also Sakura, which is on the resort area above Rathtrevor. This is a Japanese coffee and sushi place run by a very nice neighbour of ours. I haven't tried the sushi there, but the muffins she makes are fabulous, so I'm betting the sushi is too.

5.The website for the sand sculpting is http://www.parksvillebeachfest.ca. There's a really big car show on the beach on the August long weekend that you might enjoy.

Take a drive up Hwy. 4 to walk among the giant trees of Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Park:

Along the way, you can hike to spectacular Little Qualicum Falls or take a swim in Cameron Lake:

The kids should enjoy a stop at Coombs for ice cream and to see the goats on the roof:

Have a great vacation!

Thank you for all of your great tips and suggestions. One more question, would it be a good idea to take our bikes along?

Thanks again for your time!

Go for a freshwater swim in the warm waters of Sproat Lake at Sproat Lake provincial park. Stop at Cathedral Grove on you way back.

Our kids really enjoyed their visit to Butterfly World. Its very cool if you can find a female laying eggs.
