Free tastings?

We did a self guided tour recently and found wineries (Devil's Wishbone and Wapoos) charging $1 per taste. Others such as Three Dogs and The Cider Company had free tastings. Is it not normal practice to offer a small free taste to peak customers interest? I would like to know of other places that offer FREE tastings.

1. Re: Free tastings?

Each winery sets their own policies as is their right. The vast majority charge a small fee - this is common in most wine regions such as PEC, and Niagara. Often they will give you 2 or 3 tastes for the one fee. There is a fine line between people wanting a taste to peak their interest and others just wanting free wine, thus the fee.

To my knowledge there is no listing of which wineries charge or not charge.

All of the wineries we visited waived the fee if you purchased wine. If you are part of an organized wine tour (we enthusiastically recommend Gilles at Prince Edward County Wine Tours) the tastings are included in the tour. The value added beyond just tasting wines make the cost of the tour more than reasonable.
