travel from seattle to mayne island bc

We will be taking a cruise to Seattle in May and on May 10 want to visit a friend who lives on Mayne Island BC for a week. We would welcome a variety of suggestions as to how we would best get to Mayne Island. We will have transportation on the island so don't necessarily need a car but perhaps it makes sense to rent one in Seatlle. Please let us know your best advice.

Regards and thanks.

How about walk on the Victoria Clipper, then a transit bus to Swartz Bay for a Gulf Island Ferry? There is a ferry from Anacortes to Sidney which is close to the Gulf Island ferry. Or drive and take the Gulf Island ferry via Tsawwassen. Or sea plane via Victoria or sea plane charter direct. The Clipper would probably be the most cost effective. A Kenmore Air charter the easiest.

There are indeed a variety of options for getting from Seattle to Mayne.

1) Take the WA State ferry from Anacortes to Sidney, BC and then drive a few minutes to Swartz Bay for the BC ferry to Mayne Island. 2.5 hour WA ride. The Swartz-Mayne ride can vary between 50 min and 2.5 hours depending on whether the ferry is non-stop or makes 1 or 2 stops at other Gulf Islands on the way.

www.bcferries.com (look at the schedule for "Victoria Departures."

2) Drive north on I5 from Seattle to Tsawwassen and take BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Mayne, a 3 hour drive. Again, the same BC Ferries website, with either a non-stop or a 1 stop option. This option would require you to go through Customs at Blaine WA which can be a matter of 15 minutes to 2-3 hour lineups. However, May 10th is a Tuesday and that is much much better than a Friday/Sunday. So well done on that!

3) You could drive to the Vancouver International Airport, seaplane terminal on the Fraser River, a bit south of the South Terminal. About 3 hours drive from Seattle. Parking available in their lot. Check their website for luggage weight limits. This would be a spectacular sightseeing opportunity in its own right.

4) You could look into flying Kenmore Air from Seattle to Mayne. Their schedule for May is not up yet, but you can get the idea for pricing and scheduling and possible terminals.

What would I do? I would go Anacortes - Sidney - Swartz - Mayne. Easier Customs situation, away from the I5 and the highway scene, right out on the water going through the beauty of the San Juan Islands.

Hope this gets you started.
