Driving Reims to Calais

We are driving from Reims to Calais one morning in early July - is there anything worth a quick stop to see or are we better off driving right through and crossing to Dover early?

The quickest route from Riems to Calais is about 172 miles (168 miles on Motorways) and takes around 2 and a half to 3 hours.

You would probably need a comfort/food stop along the way and Arras may be the place to stop and visit.

A wonderful town to walk around and is descibed as the prettist town in Northern France.

Do make sure that you are very familiar with your rental-car contract -- most companies charge very high surcharges for one-way rentals, and many companies won't allow cross-Channel rentals at all.

(Disregard if you're dropping the car and going as foot passengers)

Laon is a most striking place, high on its own mountain and with an old quarter and impressive cathedral. It would involve a stop fairly soon after Reims.

Seeing where you're from, the most obvious stop would be the Canadian war memorial at Vimy Ridge near Arras - well worth a couple of hours of anyone's time.

There are plenty of other places to visit between Reims and Calais - Laon (as previously mentioned) the Chemin des Dames, Cassel, to name but a few - it rather depends on how much time you've got.

Well, I came here to recommend Arras too, but KeithChesterfield has beaten me to it by HOURS!!

It's not far off the autoroute though, so makes a very good Lunch stop. I like the Cafe in the Place des Heros that is 'under' the Belfry. Great for people watching and good 'nosh' too!!
