Akamina Parkway

Hi,

Last August (2013) the Akamina Parkway was closed due to water damage/repair. Has the road been repaired so it will be open for the 2014 tourist season? Thanks!

Akamina Parkway was finally repaired on November 30: pc.gc.ca/eng/…inondation-flood-2013.aspx

On the other hand, the status of the Highwood Pass section of Hwy 40 in Kananaskis Country is still unclear. As I recall, the section of Hwy 40 from Mt Kidd to Peter Lougheed Provincial Park didn't reopen until November, and of course the road south of Peter Lougheed is always closed for wildlife from December until mid-June. Here in Calgary, about 36 kilometers of bike paths and several pedestrian bridges are closed and still need repair or replacement. So I think that LIlyofthefield's question is not that unreasonable.

For up-to-date information on road conditions, you can see the Alberta Highway website

Hi Country Wife,

Thanks for your reply and also for listing the road report websites . That's helpful to have. Apparently the first person who commented on my question must have made some comment suggesting that my question was a dumb one, since I see that Trip Advisor removed their post. LOL!!! I'd rather ask the question then get to Waterton this August and find out "SURPRISE" the road is still closed. I also researched the forums before asking the question. People are so funny!!! Thanks again for your post and have a great day!!! :)

People who post in the middle of their night often aren't at their best.

I'd strongly suggest that you double-check the road report and the Waterton Lakes National Park website starting in May, as only a single lane of the Akamina Parkway was open at the end of November. That really shouldn't be the case by August, but it's not impossible.
