Personally I like the Eastern side Malcesine then down to Garda Town and Bardolino.

Garda and Bardolino are quite close futher south, Malcesine is to the North where the Lake narrows stunning views across the Lake its Mountainous in the North, but easy to get around a very good ferry service,

you can get the train from venice to peschiera del garda, you could then stay in peschiera, the next resort is lazise, absolutely beautiful, then you have bardolino and there's also sirmione which is gorgeous too, all fairly close to each other. my favourite is lazise but i have no doubt that you will enjoy any of the resorts as they are all very scenic

The east side of Lake Garda is cut into the mountains and although some towns are more select they have poorer transport connections. If you are going to travel to other towns from your base any of the main west side resorts would be a good choice, it is down to personal preference.

As you are nearly peak season expect the west side road to have very heavy continuous traffic at certain times and the resorts to be busy, a hotel with its own beach or lake frontage would be an advantage if you are going to use it. To avoid congestion you could travel to most places on the lake by water taxi.

Have a good trip.
