One week on Lake Garda. What are the must sees?

We are staying at Malcesine but would like to know what towns on Lake Garda are worth traveling to and how to easily travel around the lake or across it?

Should we take side trips to Lake Como or Lake Maggiore ... or stay on Lake Garda? Is renting a car to do this easier than taking buses or trains?

Thank you.

Hi, most of the towns on Lake Garda have something worth seeing. Malcesine has a very good ferry service which makes it easy to travel around, and there's also a bus service up and down the eastern shore of the lake.

The web site for the boats/ferries is www.navigazionelaghi.it and for the buses it's www.apt.vr.it/pdf/62-64.pdf

In Malcesine itself there's the Scaliger Castle with a museum. From Malcesine you can take the cable car up to Monte Baldo.

The closest towns to Malcesine are Limone, Riva and Torbole. There's probably enough to keep you busy for a few days just travelling between those places, but further south are the churches in Bardolino, the botanical gardens and Il Vittoriale in Gardone Riviera, the castle and the ruins of a Roman Villa in Sirmione, the mosaics in Desenzano, the promenade at Garda etc. If you like water sports there are plenty on offer at the lake.

I haven't hired a car at the lake for travelling around but I think the other DE for Lake Garda, tepore, usually does. She's the best person to advise you on car hire and travelling further afield.

Hi, As Scozzese says, there is more than enough around Lake Garda to keep you busy. I think the journeys to either Lake Como or Lake Maggiore would be well over two hours, taking a big chunk out of your day.

The boats and buses around the lake are very good, though if you are travelling from Malcesine to the south of the lake it does take quite a long time. We always hire a car mainly because it makes getting to and from the airport much easier and quicker, and gives us easier access to a lot more towns around the lake, some of which it is not possible to reach by public transport. It also means that you can just stop whenever you pass somewhere that looks interesting. There is only really one road around the lake so even at busy times it is not really a problem. All the main towns have large car parks, usually just off the main road. We are not great boat trip fans, so we find a car works best for us.

So, tepore, what are some of your favorite places you get to only by car from Malcesine? We will be staying in Torri del Benaco for a couple of days and looking for those fun excursions (and will have a car).

Also, where would we find good swimming beaches?

Thanks for the info on renting a car. It does not look like Malcesine has a car rental place. What is the closest place from Malcesine from which we can rent a car?

Thank you

There's an Avis car hire office in Malcesine on Via Gardesana, tel:(39) 0461 420276

There may be others, try a Google search for autonoleggio Malcesine.

One more question. I flight out of Verona early in the morning and I am looking to stay one night near the Verona airport or in Verona that has easy access to a cab. Do you have any recommendations?

Again, thank you.
