Riva del garda and Desenzano del Garda

Hi Coming down from Ortisei in the Dolmonites approx. mid October. Working on the itinerary.

Questions

Travelling from Mori by bus to Riva. I have a timetable of the bus from Roverto which pulls in at Mori and then on to Riva, but this of course is only until June. Will the next timetable be fewer buses in and out of Riva. Bus from Ortisei to Ponte Gardena and train to Mori and then bus as it is closer.

Then we will need to get down to Desenzano.

3 nights in Riva and 2 or 3 in Desenzano. Want to do both ends...then train to Venice.

The best and most convenient option to get down quickly from Riva to Desenzano is the bus 1hr 50 mins. Rapidi Ferry. Only have to March timetable yet, but I see there is only one and it leaves at 9.15 arrives at 11.49. 2hrs 25 mins.

Will there be far less options in October?

What is the weather usually like in mid October on the lake and are there most sights open?

Riva area and northern/mid lake villages :

Would like to see Il Vittorio at Malcasine.

Any finiculars to take us up to another village, restaurant, panoramic views. Can we walk short distances from Riva to another area of the lake. Any bus tours from Riva of interest or quick bus rides to a pretty small country village.

Have done Lake Como and west coast...eastern side this time.

Will post questions under Desenzano also.

Thanks

Il  Vittoriale is actually in Gardone Riviera on the eastern side of the lake,  about 41 kms from Riva, on the Desenzano bus route.  It is open in October but note that the museum will be closed on Mondays.

From Riva there is a nice 45 minute walk along the lakeside to Torbole, you can return the same way or by bus or ferry.    Another walk, not quite as picturesque, is to the Varone waterfall, about 45/50 mins. In Riva itself you can walk up the fairly steep zig zag path to the Bastione for wonderful views over the town and surrounding areas.    Information on walks in the area can be found here:

www.gardatrentino.it/en/Riva-del-Garda-Walks/

Arco is a pretty little town with a castle a few kilometres from  Riva and can be reached by either bus from Riva or by walking along the riverside path from Torbole.

Malcesine is a short 15 minute bus ride, where you can then take the revolving cable car to Monte Baldo.

Mid October will be quieter on the lake but there are still a lot of tourists around.    I have been twice at this time and have had good weather both times, in fact last year we actually spent a couple of hours most afternoons on the sun loungers - but the weather is unpredictable so be prepared for anything.    Many hotels on the lake road out of the main towns were closed but in the towns, with the exception of maybe the odd bar, everything else was open.

It's a lovely time to be there, the autumn colours and scenery is quite stunning.

As you have discovered getting to Desenzano from Riva is a long slow journey.  The current ferry timetable also covers October 2010, it is unlikely to change very much for the same period this year.

Generally you won't find much difference between the Summer and Winter bus timetables.

The 350 service (Ortisei - Ponte Gardena/Bolzano) and 170 (Ortisei - Bolzano) will be much the same

www.sii.bz.it for timetable solutions

as will the 301 Rovereto - Riva service.

You can obviously recheck them closer to time.

On the lake however in "winter" there is a reduced ferry service.

October the lake is starting to shut down so will be quiet.

Weather in the north can be totally different to the south at anytime of the year. Much depends on the prevailing alpine weather and how it will affect the northern end of the lake. It can be pleasant Autumn or get a early wintry feel.

The easiest route North to South is by bus.

If wanting to get out and about you also have the 62-64 bus that services the whole east side of the lake to the train station at Peschiera del Garda on to Verona

You also have Monte Baldo at Malcesine

No idea what the Cable car timetable will be.

If you are not already aware October in the Dolomites is "down time". If you are there early enough in October you will be ok. Most lifts close down end of September although a number in Ortisei/Alpe di Siusi remain open until mid October (e.g. last summer until 16th October) www.valgardena.it/de/liftanlagen/page65.html
