Travelling from Bergamo airport to Lake Garda

Hi,

I will be travelling to Lake Garda for 9 nights mid-September. We will be arriving into Bergamo airport at around noon. I have heard that it is a bit tricky to travel to Lake Garda using public transport so wondering if anyone could advise me on which area would be the easiest to reach?

We are a young couple so looking for somewhere with nice beaches and restaurants. We have the option to hire a car if it is really necessary but would prefer not to!!

This will be our first time visiting Italy so would appreciate any information :)

Hi, first of all beaches around the lake tend to be fine shingle.or small pebbles, don't expect soft sandy beaches.

You a few options for getting to the lake. There is a bus from the airport to Brescia, then you can take another bus to Desenzano del Garda, Sirmione, or Peschiera del Garda.

Alternatively you can take the airport shuttle bus into Bergamo, then train to either Desenzano del Garda or Peschiera del Garda this involves a change of change en-route. From Desenzando del Garda you can take a bus anywhere up the western side of the lake, and from Peschiera del Garda a bus up the eastern side of the lake. Really the choice is yours, but remember the further north you go the longer your journeys will be. If you wanted to go the very north of the lake, Riva del Garda has some decent beach areas, you would be better with a car.

There is also a direct bus from the airport again to Desenzano or Peschiera but that only runs three times a day and must be booked in advance.

Lazise has shingle beach areas but these do get very busy as they are in front of the large campsites, it is also close to the Gardaland Theme Parks. There are some nice grassy lakeside areas between Garda and Bardolino and both towns have numerous restaurants and bars.

Hi, thank you for your reply, your information about the trains/buses was very helpful!

We have now booked a hotel in Peschiera del Garda as it is easy to reach from the airport but I am still thinking that we might change to somewhere like Bardolino. Is Peschiera del Garda a good base? Is it easy to get buses to other parts of the lake and does it have places to rent bikes and good cycle lanes?

Thanks again for you help!

Peschiera del Garda does have fairly good ferry and bus services to Verona and as far as Malcesine. Bardolino has better ferry services and similar bus services. There are no cycle lanes in the town but there are cycle/footpath paths along the lakeside to Pacengo to the north and to Fornaci to the west. There is also a cycle path alongside the River Mincio that would take you all the way down to Mantua.

From Peschiera del Garda you can also take the train into Verona, as well as a bus to Sirmione and Desenzano del Garda.

From Bardolino there is a lakeside cycle/footpath to Garda in one direction and Lazise in the other. Both towns have places to rent bikes and many hotels also offer this service.
