Ferry to Long Island

We are staying in Chatham early September and would like to make our way back to JFK via a ferry to Long Island, which is the best route?

thanks Mick

Perhaps I should have asked if you were planning to drive part of the way to get to a ferry.

The two main ferries are New London, Connecticut to Orient, N.Y., and Bridgeport, Conn., to Port Jefferson, N.Y.

Will you have a car available? If so, you have either option available to you. Both ferry terminals are right off of Interstate 95.

If you have time to spare, I'd recommend the Orient ferry because the drive will take you through the Long Island wine country, with plenty of vineyards and tasting rooms (make sure to designate a driver). It will also be harvest time at the local farms (pumpkins, etc.).

If you need to get from Chatham to JFK via public transport, then going via ferry would not be the most typical route. You can catch a bus to Boston and then either take a quick internal flight to JFK or take the bus or train to New York and then use local transit to JFK. If you're quite intent on using the ferry, it *is* possible to do the trip by public transport, but it would involve multiple transfers and long layovers. Write back if you need these details.
