Boston to Cape Cod?

Hi - Can anyone give me some advice about an overnight trip by car from Boston to the Cape Cod area? How long would it take to drive and where is the best place to stay to get an idea of what Cape Cod is all about? We know nothing at this stage!! Thank you

Hi -- let's start with the length of the trip. In calm traffic, it takes roughly just under 2 hours from Boston to the beginning of Cape Cod. The speedy drivers will say it's 1.5 hours. But Cape Cod is a long piece of land. So it takes another, let's say 1.5 hours in calm traffic to drive all the way to the tip of Cape Cod (that's Provincetown). Traffic affects all of these things. If you are visiting any time from about mid-May to mid-September, then traffic gets heavy heading towards Cape Cod on Friday and Saturday (and if it's a holiday weekend, it will be heavy probably starting on Thursday). But maybe you can avoid those busy times. If you need to travel then, it's no problem, but it might add roughly an hour to your trip just to reach the Cape. To get an idea of what Cape Cod is all about, I feel you need to get a ways into it. Do take a look at a map. There are nice towns all over Cape Cod -- you'll find fierce advocates for EACH town on the Cape. But the landscape does start to change as you head farther out. It's more forests closer to Boston and the Cape Cod Canal, and more beach grass and dunes towards Provincetown. Here's a suggestion: whatever you do, make sure to visit some place along the "National Seashore" which is most of the Atlantic side of Cape Cod going from about Eastham up to Provincetown. I'd vote for a stay in one of these towns: Chatham, Eastham, Wellfleet, Provincetown.
