This is impossible to answer ... sort of like asking "where's the best pizza in New York City".

I LOVE the 'outer Cape" : Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, Provincetwon. Others love Falmouth and Hyannis. IMHO none is "best" but each is different and has its supporters and detracters.

Check out the "Where to Stay" thread on the top right of this forum.

Also tell us a bit about yourself ... do you want night life? Nature? Both. Casual dining? Fine Dining? Easy access to beaches? Do you like to bicycle around. Do you have kids?

Do you need to entertain your kids with go-carts, arcades and mini-golf or will the beach and programs offered by the National Seashore and maybe a night at the drive-in be sufficient?

Thank you for your response.

No kids, so we're free to visit art galleries, wine bars, wineries (?), seafood restaurants, exhibits, etc. We like history, we're big walkers and we love the ocean. We are antique-lookers, architect lovers and foodies. We like B&Bs over hotels. We love music. We love exploring.

Does this help?

For me, Fort Hill B&B in Eastham, hands down, would be the best place to base yourselves for this visit. Time your visit around availability in the Nantucket cottage there.

Oh, I would definitely agree that Fort Hill B&B would make for a GREAT place to stay at the end of September. That is of course if there's availability as it only has 2 room suites and the lovely Nanucket cottage.

Amazing Eastham location INSIDE the National Seashore. Walking trails, the marshes, the ocean in the distance, amazing breakfasts, lovely hosts in Jean and Gordon, what more could one want on a Cape Cod vacation?

annew505: Fort Hill would be my first choice but there are more suggestions listed here, in case you'd like to consider other options.

Another thought comes to mind since you are history buffs. You can stay if Falmouth on the Village Green (lined with ancient elms that were planted by slaves) at the Palmer House Inn. It is next to the Falmouth Historical Society where you can tour the gardens and interact with the docents who are dressed in period costume. They have many activities including cemetery tours where whaling captains are buried and Katherine Lee Bates the author of America the Beautiful. Check their web site for more info as well as www.falmouthchamber.com and falmouthvillageassociation.com

Along the village green you can see the church with a Paul Revere bell among so many other things.

In my opinion, that is the very best time to go to the Cape. Many of the visitors are gone but the weather is still summer-like. Explore all of 6A and the bayside beaches. THere are miles to walk in ankle deep water at low tide. Also a great time to take a ferry ride to one of the islands. And be able to find parking in Provincetown downtown or Race Point beach.
