May anniversary and best town/place to stay

We are planning on visiting cape cod area for our anniversary in may for a few days at the end of May. We wanted to find a quaint town with shops, places to eat etc. We know we would like to sightsee by car to nearby towns as well as catch the ferry to Nantucket. Does anyone have thoughts or oppinions on where to stay? Best bang for your buck? Any ideas and thoughts are appreciated

For Nantucket see www.nantucketislandferry.com Suggest you take a look at Harwich and Chatham for places to stay.

If you are looking for an in-town location, then Chatham would be a good choice. For more bang for your buck, then Harwich works and Harwich is close to the ferry to Nantucket.

If you plan to spend time on the outer cape where the Cape Cod National Seashore beaches are, then consider Eastham or Wellfleet. Both have lovely, unspoiled landscapes and will put you closer to Provincetown, with its shops and restaurants. Eastham is convenient because it is close to Chatham, Wellfleet, Orleans and Provincetown and less than 30 minutes to the Nantucket Ferry. Wellfleet has a charming town center.

So it depends.... if you want to be in the middle of a town and do not mind driving the extra distance to the National Seashore, Chatham works well (or Harwich). If you want to be closer to the wildness of the Cape Cod National Seashore and the quant towns of Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown with their beaches and boutiques, then look on the outer cape for a base. No matter where you stay, you will find many places to dine .

I agree with all the previous posts. You have described Chatham so how important is the 'more bang for your buck' part? Harwich will be less but if you are willing to get into your car for a visit to Harwich and/or Chatham Main Streets then your best value will be staying one town west in Dennisport where, by the way, there are lots of beachfront motels and even a B&B on a lovely strand on Nantucket Sound. There is also lots of casual, very casual as well as upscale dining in Dennisport and also 10 miles north in the village of Dennis on the bayside. Don't worry, you will enjoy the Cape no matter where you locate.

Also the ferry to Nantucket out of Harwich starts running on Mem. Day weekend. Is that when you plan to be on the Cape? Hope so cause then more will be open and very happy to see you. Otherwise you can still get to Nantucket on a Hyannis ferry.

What do you think of all the suggestions you've gotten so far.

Try the Village of Harwich Port....my favorite place is the Winstead Inn And Beach Resort. The Nantucket ferry is less than 1/2 mile away.
