Best place to stay in Cape Cod for 1st visit?

Hubby and I plan to come in Aug with 2 boys 11 and 13. Have never been to New England states and are from So Cal. Would like to rent house but are unfamiliar with all the small towns/areas. Pease advise best parts of Cape Cod and less desirable parts. Thanks!

Please look on the right side of the page at Top Questions about Cape Cod - the first two should help you get started. (these have been created by Cape DE's and frequent contributors)

Houses rent for a week usually. You'll really need to narrow down an area of the Cape depending on your own tastes. Then, since you are first timers, I recommend that you call a couple of realtors who do summer rentals in the towns that interest you. Otherwise you will have too many choices though August rentals book up first which means that your choices are narrowing.

If you can't decide between the areas on the Cape AND if you want to do some touring around then select a mid-Cape location so that you can travel both east and west to the natural and the commercial attractions conveniently. Sorry, but there is no one great spot on the Cape. Everyone has their favorites so you'll need to do a little research and then come back with some specific questions. Don't worry, it's really hard to go wrong on the Cape.

You cant go far wrong with choosing Orleans which has a town centre with shops, restaurants etc. Nauset Beach on the ocean side and Skaket Beach on the Bay. Easy access to the rest of the Cape in any direction. Minutes to the start of the National Seashore in Eastham. Bike paths, walking trails etc. You can try www.wilkinsonre.com for rentals or www.weneedavacation.com

As others have said there are many suitable places to stay on the Cape, it's really a personal choice. We have stayed in Falmouth, Harwich Port, Orleans and Eastham over the many years that we have been visiting. I can recommend all four.

I agree with everything the others have said....with just a few additions. For more commercial activities like bumper cars and malls, you will do less driving if you focus on the upper-cape and mid-cape areas around Falmouth and Dennisport. To be closer to the Cape Cod National Seashore, with more natural surroundings and less commercial development, choose the Orleans area. Every part of Cape Cod is beautiful and every location has things young boys might like such as mini-golf, skateboard parks, movies (only Wellfleet has an out-door drive-in theater). The outer Cape has broad ocean beaches for boogie boarding as well as Cape Cod Bay beaches for warmer, calmer swimming. I live on the outer cape and am partial to that area but young families love the Dennisport area as well!
