You will not be able to drive to Martha's Vineyard. It is an island. You can stay somewhere closer to the ferry but that is about it.

You can day-trip from most anywhere but where you go will depend upon what you like to do and want to see. What you you interested in? Did you read the questions on the right side of the screen?

You can stay in Hyannis and be close to the ferry, as well as shops and restaurants. There is another ferry in Woods Hole that is an artsy community, so they do not have any large resorts, but smaller inns. Falmouth harbor has another ferry that you can take to the vineyard and there are hotels somewhat close by,( inn on the square, holiday inn) and close to Main Street. Main activities for the kids are going to be beach, biking, mini golf, I would suggest staying in the Hyannis area.

The least expensive ferry to take to the Vineyard is the Steamship Authority out of Woods Hole, which is a village of Falmouth. Falmouth is a great spot, with plenty to do for the kids, a bike trail and good beaches.

You do not necessarily have to stay in Hyannis or even along the south coast if you want to go to Martha's Vineyard. The drive from other parts of the Cape is not excessive and Hyannis is the town that is least like the rest of Cape Cod. You might like staying in Chatham or Wellfleet for a completely different atmosphere and experience.

Dennis is extremely family friendly and there are plenty of motels lining the beaches of Nantucket Sound in Dennis Port. Additionally you have the beautiful beaches along the north shore, Cape Cod bay, and many are also in Dennis. The usual ride from Dennis to the ferry is 20 minutes with normal traffic. Input Dennis Port and your dates above in Trip Advisor and you can see all sorts of lodging types and rates. Really anywhere that you stay on the Cape will be great. At this point, if you are coming this year, your decision as to where to locate may be driven by availability. At least that will make it easier to choose...lol.
