Train schedule

Has anyone figured out an easy way to find the trains schedules? Britrail website seems overly complicated. We are traveling in September and will not be renting a car and want to plan the trip around the easy places to get to via train, but haven't found a great map with all of the routes or their schedules.

Any advice?

Thanks

I too start with the Journey Planner at the National Rail website. From there, you can go to the individual train companies' sites to find more details of a trip you wish to take.

Since British Rail was devolved into separate train companies, schedules and timetables have become more complex, as there are some overlapping routes, and each company wants to promote its service as the one to beat.

Here's a hint that may save you headaches in future: if you wish to book tickets in advance, you'll need a UK postcode to register and book online. You can register at a train company's website using your UK hotel's address, then when it comes time for payment, there will be an option to use the address to which your credit card bill is sent, otherwise you'll not be able to pay for the tickets online. It sounds more complicated than it is, but it does work - honest.

If you start at nationalrail.co.uk , click on "Train Companies and Maps" then "Rail Maps" you will get Maps for people with reduced Mobility, Station Interchange Maps and the National Rail Network Maps, all as pdfs. This includes a colour-coded map of the UK rail network showing which train companies operate on each line of route.

For schedules and fares I prefer www.traintimes.org.uk which is a more accessible front end to nationalrail.
