Hadrian's Wall

Hubby and I would like to stop at Hadrian's Wall either from Carlise on our way from London to Gourock or from Newcastle on our way from Edinburgh to London (Heathrow).

Can anyone recommend which starting point is best and approximately how long we will need to see some of the sites and get some good pics of the wall?

Thanks

Seeing Hadrians Wall could take anywhere from an hour (park at Housesteads, jog up the road to the house containing the ticket booth and little museum, visit the ruins of Housesteads fort, stand on the wall, take photos of wall stretching off in both directions, jog back to your car) to 10 days (7 days to walk the full length of the wall, about 3 days to visit the major Roman sights on or near the wall). These latter included Segedunum, Chesters fort, Corbridge fort, Housesteads, Birdoswald, Vindolanda, archeology museum at University of Newcastle.

If you are trying to drive to London the same day, I suspect all you will have time for is the one hour quickie and maybe a short walk along the wall from Housesteads to get away from hordes of other tourists.

Actually we are taking the train, then plan on hoping the Hadrian's Bus from either Carlisle or Newcastle.

Does this change your suggestions?

You can find the Hadrian's Wall bus schedule here, www.hadrians-wall.org/template.asp…

Newcastle as a starting point seems problematic, because only one bus a day starts from and ends there. But you could take the morning bus, then return by bus to Hexham train station and catch a train back to Newcastle.

I presume from your itinerary that, if you started from Carlisle, it would have to be an afternoon visit? That looks doable from the schedule. If you have enough time, you could walk the wall from Housesteads to Steel Rigg, and pick up the return bus at Once Brewed. That is probably the best part of the wall walk. It is rugged enough, though, that you should be wearing hiking boots.

Good luck.
