Carlisle to Glasgow would be the same for both options. Settle to Carlisle would be more scenic than Preston to Carlisle. But Settle is in the Yorkshire Dales, some distance from the Lake District by train.
No, you won't see Hadrian's wall. But if you get a glimpse of Carlisle cathedral or Carlisle castle, you will see stones that were removed from the wall.
Somewhat confused as neither route is on the way from the Lakes to Glasgow
If you wanted to to take the Settle Carlisle route for example then you'd have to take a train to Lancaster or Preston, another to Skipton then the train to Carlisle
And Preston-Carlisle would first mean travelling to Preston then back the same way to Carlisle.
If you are going from the Lakes to Glasgow then you take the train from Windermere to Oxenholme, then train to Carlisle and local train via Dumfries to Glasgow - or just get the direct train from Oxenholme to Glasgow)
