OK here goes - where to spend End May Bank Holiday?

A chance to get away with wife and 7 year old son from 29th-31st of May (maybe extending to 1 June).

Looking for inspiration!

We don't want to go to London or a city.

We don't want to go to anywhere in Wales this time as we do that regularly enough.

We are going to Cornwall in the summer so don't want to go to the west country.

We don't want to fly for this break and we have a car .

But would like somewhere where we can have clean air, a bit of history, maybe the sea (but not essential), a fun place to explore, a bit of hiking maybe (but appropriate for a family), kick a ball around, nice pubs etc.

I was thinking maybe the Corfe Castle area because of the Enid Blyton connection. It seems reachable for a long weekend. Any thoughts anyone?

Any other thoughts on places which match the sort of thing I am looking for are welcome.

Jim

Hi Wansteader

I am dying to go back to Suffolk/Norfolk (have not been there for over 20 years) but wondered whether it was a bit too far a drive from Cardiff for a short break?

Dorset (and the Isle of Purbeck) is a good choice for boys (and their sons, LOL!). Corfe Castle is very atmospheric; the model village is small but fun, and I love the scones and cakes they serve in the cafe there.

You've got the swans at abbotsbury; fossil walks along the beach at Charmouth (they'll definitely being doing a guided walk for the bank holiday weekend); if you want some sand, try Shell Beach opposite Bournemouth.

The Blue Pool is wonderful for walks. Durdle Door; Steam railway (nearly forgot that!) between Corfe and Swanage...

Come on over!

How about the Isle of Wight or New Forest Jim. Long time since I've been down that way, but both places were great for a family, walking, bonding, relaxing holiday.

That said we had a lovely time down in Dorset a few years ago. We all partook in a bit of rolling down the grass hill at Corfe Castle and fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast. Great memories!

Thanks Gilliganuk - lots of stuff I need to look into there.

Englandsixpence - I totally forgot to say in my first post - we ARE coming to North Yorkshire, but later this summer. Very good friends of ours run a guest house in Harrogate but we can't visit them over late spring Bank Holiday as they have been booked out for over a year because of a Barbershop choir gathering that weekend! However, we are very very much looking forward to heading up north!

Purpleceltic

Thanks - Wife and I went to the Isle of Wight 11 years ago. mmmmm sorry but not convinced it is worth the journey. We loved Osborne House though but maybe not on this occasion.

Now New Forest I am totally ignorant about - thanks for the idea - I will look into that.

cheers

Jim

To add to Gilli's post about Dorset. For a beach and walks then Studland plus Brownsea Island. Also I always enjoyed Poole for a little wander.

Oh wow my heart goes out to Studland! I've checked it out on the web and yes! Thanks!

Thank you so much everyone - I think I am leaning towards the Dorset coast for end-May - but that said I think our "UK staycation" this year will now include a trip to East Anglia as well as Yorkshire. We have family in Scotland so go there in any case so they are out of the equation for this particular trip, but this has been genuinely helpful to get thoughts on England - yeah yeah - there is Northumberland, Kent, Lincoln etc - so many places to see .....

Hi

Continuing the Dorset theme - there is the tank museum at Bovington and nearby Monkey World.

Glad you have checked out Studland!
