General visitor Visa from SA to UK

I was in the process of booking a ticket for my mom who is South African to visit me over Easter in England. I just happened to find out that since 2009 any visitor to the UK need a visa to gain entry.

Is this something that could be applied for at the airport? I dont know how straight forward it is doing it in SA, but I wanted to get the ticket booked before prices went up. Does anyone know anything about these visas

From 1 July 2009, all South African, Swaziland and Lesotho passport holders need a visa to enter or transit the UK. See here for details and procedure:
