Did you want to stay in a self catering castle (or bit of) or were you thinking about a B&B/hotel?

It's a bit late to organise a rental perhaps, but Landmark Trust might be able to help: http://www.landmarktrust.org.uk/.

I'm not sure if the children are old enough to remember a castle stay, so a good compromise would be to visit some of the ruined/lived in castles as a day-trip. By July, there are bound to be several castles in the UK with themed weekends where enthusiasts set up camp in castle grounds and re-enact battles/skirmishes. Alternatively, kit them out with plastic swords and let them run about at a ruined castle.

I can think of plenty of great places in Northumberland but I hope somebody else can advise re Scotland.
