The major Scottish centre you need to head for is Glasgow. Once you are there, there are regular buses (most economical) and trains (most convenient) to get you to your final destination.

In terms of getting to Glasgow, long-distance buses are cheap (sometimes as cheap as £1 - megabus) but it's a grinding journey. If you book early enough (say, three months in advance), you can find good deals on both train and plane. Note that the cheap air fares are offered by the low-cost carriers who do not fly out of Heathrow, so if that's where you are starting from, you need to factor in the costs of transferring airports and leave plenty of time to make the connection. In terms of convenience, folks here constantly argue whether train or plane is better.

Ryanair fly to Prestwick from Stansted which takes about one hour. www.ryanair.com but be warned they only let you take 15kg as hold luggage. Any more than that and you pay dearly.

Getting from London to Glasgow is easy - best bet would either be by train or flight. If you book early enough in advance you can get fantastic rates (£20 one way) on the train from London to Glasgow, this would also let you 'see' the country from the train window.

Alternatively, Easyjet, and British Airways fly to Glasgow airport. Ryanair also fly from London to Prestwick airport which is located in Ayrshire (just north of Ayr itself).

Once in Glasgow it is a relatively quick and easy journey to anywhere in Ayrshire by train or bus.

Easyjet fly daily from Gatwick to Glasgow. www.easyjet.com. I have used them on this route many times and find them to be reasonable. If you can book early enough you might find you get a good deal. Then from Glasgow airport get the bus to the station in Paisley - it takes around 15 minutes - and from Paisley Gilmour Street Station there are various trains to Ayrshire - Ayr, Largs, Ardrossan, etc.

This may well work out cheaper than taking the train or bus from Gatwick to central London, and then coach or train to Scotland from there. I find the best train deals are on the Virgin Rail website: www.virgintrains.co.uk.

Ayrshire is a county in south-west Scotland.

If you tell us where, in Ayrshire, you want to go, we can give you specific advice. The advice for Ayr might be different than for other towns in the county, etc.

Troon is on the coast about 30 miles south of Glasgow, with a good train service from central Glasgow.

It's also about 2 miles from Prestwick airport.

Glasgow Airport is about 25 miles north, and you can get a bus or taxi from there to Paisley to catch the train from Glasgow to Ayr. A good transport information site -

So, from Gatwick, you'll have flying or train options via Glasgow.

If a direct flight from Italy to Prestwick to Glasgow is otherwise suitable, that would be a very good way to go.
