Dumfries Scotland to Southampton England

We will be visiting family in the UK this summer and need to get from Southwestern Scotland (Dalbeattie) to Southampton England in a time efficient manor, preferably a flight. Do we need to go back up to Glasgow to catch a Flybe flight or is there a southern airport to fly from? Having a hard time finding this information on any websites. Thanks! Also, should we stay in Dumfries, Dalbeattie or Kirkcudbright? Family of 3 (13 year old son) and we would like something a little upscale and memorable. We will have a car.

The only nearer airport is Prestwick, but it has no flights to anywhere in England. Flybe also flies to Southampton from Newcastle, which is about the same driving distance from Dumfries as is Glasgow airport, so probably no advantage there.

Those seem to be the choices, other than train from Dumfries or Carlisle.

Looks like FlyBe from either Glasgow or Newcastle to Southampton.

If you are transferring to a cruise, the Southampton Airport website has some useful information:

When you say "we will have a car", is that a rental car? In which case you also need to factor in where that has to be returned to. If you pick the car up at Glasgow, then returning it to Glasgow avoids one-way fees.

The train from Dumfries to Southampton requires at least two, and usually three, changes, so I suspect flying from Glasgow will be less hassle.

Note that flybe rules on baggage - ensure you understand those.

We will fly out of Glasgow and thanks for all your advice and guidance on airports, car rental and Flybe baggage rules. One more thing, we are trying to decide whether to stay at the Kings Arm in Dalbeattie where our relatives live or somewhere in Kirkcudbright? Since we will have a rental car, we can easily drive back and forth from the coast to Dalbeattie. Any thoughts on this?
