We don't know whether to get an unlimited eurorail pass for 2 months because it costs 1089 dollars and we don't want to be wasting full days travelling because we don't have much time. But we are on a tight budget so need to figure out something cheap

For rail travel in the UK, check train times and fares at www.nationalrail.co.uk You may book from about 12 weeks in advance directly with the train operating companies at their websites. Using third party websites like thetrainline.com will mean paying fees, which you need not do.

Keep an eye out for Group Save fares since you will be a party of three. Please ensure you read the fare rules closely if you book some restricted tickets; Advance, for example, may be used only on the specific train booked. Miss that train and you will need to buy tickets at the walk up fare.

If you do not want to fly to the continent, start your journey from England at www.eurostar.com You may be able to book tickets now for July; again book directly with the train operator than with a third party.

Filghts from Berlin to Greece will be cheaper than the train.** Although there are low cost carriers in Europe - easyJet, Vueling, Air Baltic, Ryanair and more - please make dummy bookings to ensure you calculate the total fare, including taxes and (not necessarily optional) fees. Keep in mind that LCCs may operate from airports well away from your destination, so add in cost and travel time to and from those airports. You may find that booking with a scheduled carrier - Lufthansa, Swiss, BA, KLM for example - may be cheaper than an LCC.

You will need to fly from Greece to Italy as well.

www.bahn.de www.voyages-sncf.com www.renfe.com and www.trenitalia.com are start points for rail journeys in those countries. From late May, the rail travel time from Barcelona to Paris will be reduced to just eight hours, so consider rejigging your time in Spain and make the journey from BCN to Paris rather than San Sebastian to Paris.

www.seat61.com will be of use as well.

Don't discount couchettes on overnight trains. They will cost a little more, but the opportunity to have a lie down instead of trying to sleep in a train seat will mean you will be much more rested and ready for sightseeing at your destination.

**You have allowed no travel time in your itinerary at all, but are moving from one country to another on the same day. For some, Germany to Greece, that will be doable because you will need to fly. For others, you will need to consider either overnight trains or will have to reconsider your very busy itinerary. The rail websites above are useful because with them you can calculate travel time.

You may find yourselves dashing from point to point and seeing rail stations rather than sightseeing; doing that isn't much of a holiday. Consider travel times and you may have to reconsider your itinerary.

Look at the train travel forum for discussion of Eural passes, the general view being that they are a bad idea.

You will have to fly most of your longer inter country journeys unless you want to spend days on the train - look at Skyscanner.net to see who flies from a to b and look carefully at the whole cost of a flight, including baggage etc. You may need to do this before finalising your route as you may find that some journeys have no direct flights. Remember that most low cost operators don't book journeys involving connections as a whole journey, so the connections are at your risk.

Within Italy, France and Spain book trains from the relevant national rail companies.

Marseille to Barcelona can be done by train and so can Paris to London (eurostar.com). San Sebastian to paris is also possible but get to Hendaye on a frequent narrow gauge local train to catch a fast train to Paris.
