Three days in Edinborough then travel four days to Wimbeldon

We are hiring a car, have booked a BnB in Edinburgh for 3 days till 18June then have to be in Wimbledon by 22 June. A few questions:

1. What would be the best things to do and see in Edinburgh. We do not mind driving a lot in a day so would have no hesitations being the distance is reasonable as such eg:no good going to Glasgow. Day trips as such would be great.

2. Does anyone know of companies that offer car hire as well as BnB vouchers in a deal to travel down to Wimbledon. We meet a Canadian couple in Ireland who were doing this through a company called Enterprise car hire but can't find anything on their website for any country.

3. Any other ideas would be appreciated

Hi,

Enterprise are well-known, but there must be about 30 national car hire firms. Avis, Hertz, Budget, etc.

I doubt anyone does vouchers these days. It's too easy to simply phone/email the B&B and book it yourself. What advantage do vouchers give you?

Most importantly, a car is pretty much useless in Edinburgh. You might be better exploring Edinburgh on foot or by public transport.

If you still want the car, try exploring Fife for a day. Along the south coast and on to St Andrews, Falklands Palace etc. A lot depends on what you want to see? Glasgow? lochs? Distilleries? Ruins? Hills?

We would like to do day trips say to the Scottish highlands then come back into Edinburgh for each night as accommodation booked there. Also, when we travel to Wimbeldon suggestions on places to go and stay on the way down

If you go to sites like VisitScotland and Undiscoveredscotland , amongst others, they have excellent suggestions for driving routes.

And there are several suggestions every day on this forum if you care to browse older posts.

As well as Fife, which has a lot of scenery and history and is close to Edinburgh, there is the Border region to the south.

Travelling due west, you can be in the Highlands in about 90 minutes via a fast motorway, almost all the way to Loch Lomond.

Drive around the Loch and return via the neighbouring Trossachs. It's a National Park and very scenic. Plenty of castle, pubs, views, etc.

And you can also go to the Central Highlands on a day trip - Pitlochry, River Tay, Dunkeld, etc etc.

Before you ask - Loch Ness and Skye are not worth a day trip.

Heading south to Wimbledon, I would drive through the Borders, via Jedburgh and cross the border at Carter Bar on the A68. Stop for the views, photos and the piper. (Make sure you have petrol/gas - there's a dearth of fuel outlets around there.

I would stay somewhere in the Yorkshire Dales or North Yorkshire Moors - both National Parks.

Then explore the Peak District and the Cotswolds on the way south.

Use a route planner like www.viamichelin.com to gauge how much driving you want to do each day.

Thanks peters to for the information. Will take a look and use the guides recommended. Three days is not long enough but we do like to drive so the suggestions you have given us are fantastic. Thanks.

I have never heard anyone on the Ireland forum say a good word for the BandB vouchers, they are very limiting as only about 10% of the actual Band Bs accept them.
