car hire on a Sunday in UK!

We are a party of 3 adults and 2 children travelling from Australia. We arrive by Eurostar from Paris on a Sunday, and want to hire a car outside of London (any town outside of London) to take us to the Cotswolds, from where we start our tour. The trouble is, I have not been able to get a car hire on a Sunday! I've tried Oxford, Peterborough, Coventry, Milton Keynes and they all come up with a message saying their office is closed, choose another day. We can't choose another day! Any suggestions???

Why not get a train to Oxford, enjoy a Sunday walk around there ( larger shops & chains will be open, but smaller/independent shops may be closed) and then set off out of town on Monday morning?

However, google for "oxford 7 day car hire" brings up an affiliates site, where a search for a hire commencing on a Sunday leads to offers from www.europcar.co.uk/car-hire-OXFORD.htmlr . Google is your friend!

Assuming everywhere outside London's closed, your options are:

- go to Oxford or Bath and overnight there.

- get the tube to Heathrow from St P and hire the car there. FAR easier than worrying about provincial cities anyway (Peterborough is half a day's drive from the Cotswolds anyway)

- hire a car in central London. I can understand why many foreigners are leery of this, but you're a subject of the Queen and used to driving on the proper side of the road. As long as the pickup place is either around St Pancras or on Edgware Rd, getting to the Cotswolds involves little more than pointing the car west and scarcely stopping till you hit the "Cotswolds start here" sign 75 miles, and 90 mins max of effortless driving later.

From the places round St Pancras, that "little more" involves a tricky bit of navigation for the first 500 yards that might not be the ideal introduction - especially on a Sunday, when traffic round there can be surprisingly heavy.

But at Hertz Edgware Rd, you turn left out of the depot, drive straight for 150 yds, then turn left again straight onto the overhead dual carriageway, from where it's a painless 60 miles till you first encounter two-way traffic for a mile north of Oxford before the dual carriageway resumes till you get to Woodstock.

You'll wonder why you worried.

Spoken like someone who is used to that traffic! We've both been drivers in London in the past, but no more! We are both rather aged, and we now find it remarkably stressful.

We are actually booked to stay in a village in the Cotswolds on the Sunday night.

I've made several attempts at booking Europcar in Oxford, but always get the message 'there is no car available'. I've also tried Alamo, Hertz, Avis, etc etc. Part of the problem I believe is that we want to leave the car at another town.

Thanks for your help.

There isn't too much traffic on a Sunday so you should be fine. V.few car rental places other than outside airports/big city locations are open on a Sunday, and then only Sunday morning. Edgware Road is your easiest option, followed by St.Pancras then LHR. You'll have to pick one of them.

Where do you want to leave the car?

It may be that the firm has no depot there, so it's coming back with a negative.

So, if you want to leave it in, say, Chester, it's likely that the firm has depots in nearby Liverpool or Manchester.

More information needed. It could be that you would be better off using a train.
