I'm sure any hire company would be happy to take your money by debit card.. but you lose the protection of being able to reclaim the money from the credit card company if there's a problem.

Personally I would get a credit card, far more likely to get accepted than a debit card.

A debit card could be for an account with no money in it, so if they try to take money out it will get rejected.

Less likely to happen with a credit card.

You can always cut it up at the end of your holiday if you want to stop using it.

Not so Martin C, many don't.

OP, if your reluctance is because you don't want to run up debts and dont have the self control not to, get one, use it for this, pay it off then destroy it.

If its because you can't get one for some reason, you'll just have to keep looking there are a few companies that accept them. But not many.

Do understand how this works.

A hire company accepting a debit card places a "hold" on your card for a very great deal more than the estimated hire cost. This is to cover the risks of damage, extras (like petrol or Satnav hire), your stealing the car and in some cases to cover the cost of the insurance the company has to take out for your higher default risk. For a typical hire cost of a few hundred pounds, this might amount to several thousand pounds of "hold" - and if you haven't got that in your account (or within your agreed overdraft limit) on the day you collect the car, you'll be refused, even if they've already accepted the booking.

You'll also lose access to that amount of money till you return the car (and possibly for some time thereafter). Many companies don't accept debit cards as security (though they'll all take debit cards for payment) and the way many of us run our current bank accounts, you might find yourself seriously embarrassed financially till some time after you've returned the car if the "hold" is on your only debit card.

With the huge boom in "bad risk" credit cards, it's a good idea to get a credit card, however immense a nominal interest rate you're liable to pay, for just this reason. It can be financial suicide to use it for buying things: but a sensible way of hiring cars without becoming penniless for several weeks. Use it for the car hire security, then make sure you pay at the end with your debit card.

Martin C is only half right. Any hire company WILL be happy to take your money by debit card. Many won't be happy to lend you their car with only a debit card for security, though. Most of them will, in one way or another, charge you a great deal to compensate them for their unhappiness

Hertz will take visa debit only, and the card member details must be embossed, not printed.

if the "hold" is on your only debit card.

===========

which reminds me, there is another downside to debit cards. With a credit card, its possible to put a hold on, lets say £1,000, onto, for example an Australian credit card. When the hold comes off, the £1,000 vanishes (you never even see it except as a lowering of your credit card limit)

However you cannot do holds with debit cards, Instead what happens is that a payment is taken, and then later a credit is added to cancel it out. Unfortunately, what happens due to the difference in exchange rates for buy and sell between Oz and UK currency, is that you'll find one doesn't cancel the other, so you'll inevitably lose a fair chunk of money, might be as much as 10% according to others who have posted here before.
