Starting Trip in London...where to go after?

Hi all,

My family is planning on taking a trip to Europe to celebrate our daughter's (only child) Middle School graduation. Her first trip to Europe was over Thanksgiving last year, and we visited London and Paris. She absolutely fell in love with London, and wishes to go back on this trip. We are going in February or April of 2014, during her school vacation, to hopefully cut the cost down. Anyways we are aiming to start the trip in London. Any suggestions of places to visit that are a reasonable distance and can be reached my train (preferred not necessary)? Thanks!

Since you've visited London before, it would be helpful if you said which sights you have already seen so people don't list these again.

We have done all of the touristy things, Tower Of London, Big Ben, Trafalger Square etc. Also our budget is around 6K is that will be helpful.

6K of what? We will assume you mean pounds.

Hi Kate,

In London - Greenwich is worth a day visit.

"A reasonable distance" I take to mean a day trip so - Windsor (royal connections). Norwich (a small compact city), Canterbury (church connections) Cambridge ( old university town plus US war memorial).

How is that for a few starters?

Happy planning

Bob

All attractive towns within about a one hour train journey of London are Cambridge, Oxford, Canterbury, Windsor, Winchester and Rochester. About 2 hours away is York which is very attractive .

Hi,

all of the above posts are good but as I live near Chester I would suggest Chester as a base for a few days.

North Wales is on our door step and Chester is similar to York and Liverpool is a short train trip away.

The Lake district is a must and the West coast of Scotland is amazing for scenery but none of these are like London and they might not be what a young girl wants to see.

Perhaps it should be Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Thanks for all the suggestions...any insight on whether it would be wise to start in London, then go to Germany (Munich most likely) by train? Or Prague or Vienna? Is the train worth the views or would a flight be a better option?
