Churches with a lovely hill top view of english countryside

Hello,

My fiancee and I have always dreamed of finding a lovely church on a hill side or hill top which over looks beautiful english countryside. We live in Bedfordshire but are keen to look further a field like Cotswolds, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire etc really anywhere in the country that fits that description which would be our own special place. Many thanks to anyone that can help us in any way!

It isn't clear whether or not you want to find this church to get married in, but one of the ultimate hill top churches is on Dartmoor - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brent_Tor

If it were for the purpose of a marriage ceremony, I expect you would have to seek special permission.

Hope that helps!

St Martha's-on-the-Hill near Guildford

Can we have some more information as to why you are asking this question so we can answer?

Hi guys thanks for such prompt replies!

It would be for having our wedding there. And I think youre right special permission would be required but fingers crossed if we find the right setting we could hopefully get the ball rolling. A date isnt set yet thats why we are searching around & our internet searches havent been too fruitful.

The places you came up with look lovely & am looking forward to showing them to my fiancee!

Thanks again & any other additional help & suggestions are very welcome!

Also time of year isnt set yet although the mention of first week of September has come up once or twice. But suggestions for best times of year for any places suggested would also be of great help.

Thanks again for any help! : )

I went to a wedding at St Martha's a few years ago and it was great. Do be aware that there is no road access, only a 4x4 track, so make sure you check out if all your guests are up for a short uphill walk.

St Mary's in Rye is even lovelier, right at the top of the tiny town. Elsewhere, look in North Devon.

Thanks Mike for another great suggestion. Also good to hear from someone whos actually attended a wedding at one of these places. Just wondering where did they have the reception at St Martha's wedding?

Here : http://www.lythehill.co.uk/ A lovely drive of maybe 20 mins.

I'd also check out here right in the heart of the south downs and a reception venue across the road. Idyllic : http://www.westsussex.info/upwaltham.shtml

In a marsh, not on a hill - but this would be my choice : http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Zztq-6LHN4w/TVqAIbkYjGI/AAAAAAAAG9I/pi3jSakPR6I/s1600/Fairfield+Church+and+Bridge.jpg

You might find this site useful as it as it tells you that you can marry in a C of E church if you can show one of the following and then there is list.

www.yourchurchwedding.org

Many of the churches on a hill will be C of E although there will be others of different demonimations who will probably have their own list.

This can be seen south of Petersfield on the London Waterloo - Portsmouth line, probably a bit far for you?
